We got some early hands-on time with the Sony A7S II last night, a full frame, mirrorless camera we have dubbed “the master of the dark arts” for its impressive low light shooting prowess. We shot several images and videos with the A7S II at a dark night club at extraordinarily high ISOs (up to ISO 409,600!) and have included them below in this review at full resolution so you can check them out.
“Every time I see your face it reminds me of the places we used to go…” sings Ringo Starr in his song Photograph, co-written with George Harrison on a yacht in the south of France in 1971. Much of the world may not be aware that Ringo is also a photographer who chronicled the frequent travels of The Beatles during their heyday in the 1960s.

The OM-D E-M10 Mark II (E-M10 II in the following text) is the second generation of the Olympus entry level E-M system line. The first E-M10, introduced in January 2014, was a very small and compact camera with SLR design elements. The E-M10 II has a very similar look with even more “retro style” elements. The on/off switch, for example, looks like the same switch on the analog Olympus OM-1 from the 1970s.
The race was more joy than suspense. American Pharoah had already taken the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, and he led the 2015 Belmont Stakes from the start and was never challenged. Early on, racing fans at Belmont Park were pretty sure they were going to see the first Triple Crown winner in 37 years.
Canon tooks the wraps off two new compact PowerShot G-series cameras this morning. Both feature 20.2-megapixel, 1-inch CMOS image sensors but sit in different places in the G-series line. The Canon PowerShot G5 X is a step above the current G7 X, which we reviewed earlier this year. Meanwhile, the Canon PowerShot G9 X is the new entry-level model in the line.
Sony’s A-series cameras have gotten a lot of coverage in the photo press in the last few years with the recently introduced Sony A7R II receiving the kind of the pre-release hype not seen since the launch of the Canon 5D Mark II back in 2008. While this would seem to be good news for Sony, it’s tough to gauge what kind of impact it’s had.

We don’t know if this guy’s got water on his brain or not but he’s clearly got a screw loose. Check out his very ill advised technique for cleaning his expensive camera gear: deliberately soaking it in water.
Want a camera with the imaging power of a digital SLR that can fit in your pocket? Well, a Palo Alto, CA-based company called Light has an interesting new compact device that promises to be 16 cameras in one. Called the L16, the slender, rectangle-shaped device is stuffed with an arachnoid-like array of cameras and lenses, which combine with software to capture what the company claims will be DSLR-worthy images.
Over 2000 participants gathered in New York’s famous Central Park yesterday to join Yoko Ono in honoring the memory of former Beatle John Lennon on what would have been his 75th birthday. Their goal was to set a new world’s record for the largest human peace sign and while the effect is certainly impressive it was unfortunately not enough to actually break the current record according to the Guinness World Records (set in Ithaca, NY in 2009 with over 5000 participants).

Studio lighting hardware is going through the biggest change—a paradigm shift, really—since the flashbulb was invented in 1929. There are many trends and fads with LED’s popularity seemingly having equal parts of both. LED lighting also appeals to DSLR and mirrorless camera shooters who want to capture stills and video.
