There’s no one camera that’s perfect for everyone. Maximum resolution is a top priority for landscape photographers, while sports shooters put a premium on high-speed image capture and processing. And for some, portability or video capabilities are key considerations.

In February 2017, Canon announced three new cameras that use basically the same image sensor and image processor system: the EOS M6 mirrorless and two DSLR systems, the EOS Rebel T7i and the EOS 77D. Located right beneath the EOS 80D, which is the mid-range DSLR of Canon’s APS-C systems, is the EOS 77D.

Canon just unveiled the 6D Mark II, a relatively compact and lightweight DSLR fitted with a 26.2-megapixel, full frame CMOS sensor. The Canon EOS 6D Mark II, as the name suggests, is the long-awaited follow-up to the popular 6D, which was announced in 2012.

The new Nikon D5600 is a midrange DSLR camera based around a 24.2-megapixel DX-format (APS-C) sensor. The sensor offers the same resolution as the previous D5500. The same goes for the image processor—the Expeed 4 system—that was used in the D5500, which was launched two years ago (January 2015).

The new Sony A99 II is a DSLR-like Single-Lens Translucent (SLT) system with a fixed and translucent mirror system. It’s Sony’s first full-frame sensor SLT with an A-mount since the first A99, which was launched in 2012. The new camera features an electronic viewfinder system with high resolution (2.36 million RGB dots) and uses its mirror system for the AF sensor. It combines a standard AF system with a highly sophisticated image sensor AF system; it can use 79 AF areas on its dedicated AF sensor and 399 AF areas on the image sensor, resulting in very fast and reliable focusing. This combination is called “Hybrid Phase Detection AF.” The mirror system allows the user to work with an SLR-type focus system as well as a continuous live preview on the screen or electronic viewfinder.

My contention has always been that a real live camera affords superior image quality over any smartphone. But you know that already, especially when it comes to optical options, low-light capability, high ISO, video capability, and, perhaps most importantly, the experience of being able to see what you are shooting (through the optical finder of a DSLR) in bright light.

The newest version of Canon’s workhorse, full-frame DSLR, the EOS 5D Mark IV, offers a brand-new 30.4MP sensor system, while its forerunner used a 22MP sensor. The new sensor offers Dual Pixel Raw images and new Raw converter software, Digital Photo Professional 4. In addition, the new sensor offers Dual Pixel CMOS AF, which first appeared in the Canon EOS 70D and is helpful when shooting in live view mode or when recording videos.

We gave Canon’s flagship EOS-1D X Mark II DSLR our very first Shutterbug Top Clicks award for a very good reason. It’s an incredible photographic tool. Photographer David Dupuy decided to put it to the test himself for Shutterbug during a recent assignment in exotic Bali, Indonesia.

Sony announced the long-awaited A99 II DSLR-style camera at photokina 2016 this week and Shutterbug was one of a handful of media outlets to get to shoot with a pre-production version of the camera. What was it like? Well, in a nutshell, it was fast!

The new Canon EOS-1D X Mark II professional DSLR is the long-awaited follow-up to the EOS-1D X, which was launched in 2012 and quickly became one of the most popular cameras for action and sports photographers. In that respect, the 1D X Mark II has some very big shoes to fill. The new camera does add a lot of new features, including a new sensor, a new AF system, new video capabilities, and much more. The resolution of the 1D X Mark II’s new full-frame sensor has increased by 2MP to bring it to a respectable 20MP.

The K-70 is Pentax’ newest SLR camera with a 24MP APS-C sized image sensor. It is a heavy camera (body: 1.5 lbs; 2.4 lbs including the kit lens), yet is quite compact. It has a splash-proof body and can be used in inclement weather conditions. The Pentax SMC DA F3.5-5.6 ED AL IF DC WR kit lens (used for the test) is also weatherproof.
