The Classic Car Club Manhattan. What could possibly be a more appropriate venue for a product launch event by a company that’s done an amazing job of capturing classic, retro lines in its X-100 and X-Pro series cameras? We’re talking about Fujifilm, of course, and the product that was launched at the CCCM is the exciting new Fujifilm X-T2.

The X-T2 is Fujifilm’s second mirrorless camera with the new “X-Trans CMOS III” sensor, first seen in the company’s top-of-the-line X-Pro2 model. The X-T2 offers 24 megapixels of resolution and is Fujifilm’s first X-series camera that is able to record video in 4K resolution.

The Fujifilm X-T2 is a compact but serious mirrorless camera you can bring anywhere. It hovers between the enthusiast and pro product categories with a feature set and performance levels previously only available in DSLRs. Or in other words, the photographic power that 12 pounds of gear used to deliver is now offered in a camera less than half the weight with all the image quality. Highlights of the Fujifilm X-T2 include an APS-C-sized 24.3-megapixel X-Trans CMOS III sensor with no low-pass filter, and the ability to shoot 4K video.

The Fujifilm X-T20 is a mirrorless system camera with a 24MP sensor that was developed by Fujifilm. This “X-Trans CMOS III” sensor is already used in Fujifilm’s top-of-the-line X-T2 and X-Pro2 mirrorless cameras. To optimize detail reproduction and sharpness the sensor doesn’t use a low-pass filter: it uses the unique “X-Trans” RGB pattern instead of the standard Bayer pattern.

Many photographers are more than willing to pay a significant premium for the latest full-frame cameras, but does the difference in image quality as compared to crop-sensor cameras justify the extra cost? We don’t expect to answer this question here, but the six-minute video below provides an interesting take on the ongoing sensor size debate.

Albert Normandin has photographed in Myanmar on 13 visits over 12 years. He estimates he’s spent over 600 days in the country. He won’t guess at how many photos he’s taken. This one, though, has somewhat special significance.

The new Night Sight mode for the Google Pixel 3 smartphone’s camera has been getting a lot of good press lately so photographer Pierre T. Lambert thought he would put it to the ultimate challenge. Instead of comparing it against other smartphone cameras, he pitted the Pixel 3’s Night Sight mode against the low light shooting skills of his Sony A7R III mirrorless camera.

Sony got in the game this morning by unveiling the super speedy Sony A9 full frame mirrorless camera, which is designed for sports and action photography. The A9 features what Sony is calling the “world’s first” full-frame stacked CMOS sensor with 24.2MP of resolution, and it has the ability to shoot “blackout-free” bursts of images at up to 20 frames per second (fps) for up to 241 Raw or 362 JPEG images.

Arguably, the biggest camera news at this year’s photokina show in Cologne, Germany was the announcement of the new Fujifilm GFX, a medium format mirrorless camera, which was unveiled to much fanfare on Monday. Shutterbug was one of a handful of media outlets to get our hands on a prototype of the 51.4-megapixel GFX and try it out for about half an hour in a conference room at the show.
