Through his camera viewfinder Marc Riboud sees a world of gestures and graceful movements framed by elegant geometrical spaces. For over sixty years, he has photographed people and places with eyes full of wonder. Now in both New York City and his hometown of Lyon, France his delightful images from nearly sixty years of photography are on exhibit.

One way that photographers can add variety to a portrait session is to shoot a few images in black and white. The way I like to do it is to put the camera in monochrome mode then shoot with Raw+JPEG capture, creating two files at the same time—one in color, the other in monochrome—that you can show your subject right away. I did this recently and the subject loved the look of the black-and-white portrait so much that we continued the session shooting that way. That said, since this is the lighting issue I’d like to start with some new items to light up your photo life.

PhotoPlus Expo in New York City may not have featured as many blockbuster photo gear announcements as photokina in Germany had last month but there was certainly an ample amount of interesting new gear and software at the show.

Moving far beyond the accepted norm, Brad Wilson put a fresh and unique twist on wildlife photography. Wilson wanted to capture the beauty of wild animals outside of their usual natural environment—or even the safe confines of a zoo enclosure. He wanted us to see the animals (including lions, owls, elephants, chimps, bulls, jaguars, cheetahs, alligators and more) in a setting that he had total control over, his own studio. 

Think Tank Photo unveiled a collection of new bags for mirrorless cameras at PhotoPlus Expo today. The new Perception series are Think Tank’s smallest and lightest backpacks. Think Tank also announced the release of a new size to its Digital Holster line-up: the Digital Holster 5. 

I think Mr. Erwitt’s talking about “the way you see” is the best advice for any photographer no matter what their experience level may be. One way to open your mind and eyes to different ways of seeing the world is to look at other people’s images, and that’s one of my goals with this column. Flatbed scanners are great for copying documents and creating high resolution image files from printed pictures. Every serious photographer should own a flatbed. However, there are times when a digital camera trumps a scanner at its own game. “When?” you ask. Read on!

One of the cooler (or geekier, depending on your perspective) imaging products being shown off at the PhotoPlus Expo show in New York City is a high-performance, remote-controlled car designed to help shoot high-speed tracking video. Called the Tero, the miniature vehicle is being sold by Freefly Systems, which created the vaunted 3-axis MoVI stabilizer camera gimbal.

One of the more interesting product debuts at PhotoPlus Expo came from a company not traditionally associated with photography. LG Electronics launched its new Digital Cinema 4K Monitor (31MU97) at the show, hoping to further turn on photographers to the splendors of Ultra HD imaging.
