Saturated Color
Our Picture This! assignment for this month was Saturated Color. While the world is certainly colorful enough, our interpretation of it can be enhanced through the judicious use of additional vividness in the camera through saturation settings and/or, in the case of film, with a high-saturation color slide film such as Fujifilm's renowned Velvia. The response from readers was overwhelming, and our selection room dazzled with the many prints we received. It's clear that in these shots, color is a queen dressed in resplendent robes.

Door Detail, Old Car

Sandra Kunz made this image of an old car parked on the street in Shaniko, Oregon, and captured it with a Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT with a 28-135mm IS Canon lens. Exposure was f/9 at 1/125 sec at ISO 200.

Seeking Saguaro north of Phoenix, Gary W. Potts came across this juxtaposition and framed it with his Nikon N80 and Nikon 35-70mm lens with polarizer. He exposed at f/11 at 1/60 sec on Fujifilm's Velvia 50.

Glowing Tree

Bob Jones found a dazzling background light for this tree near Taos, New Mexico. He exposed with a Minolta A2 at f/11 at 1/250 sec at ISO 100, then inverted and made a hue/saturation adjustment in Adobe's Photoshop.

Balloon Ride

The paint job on this balloon shot during the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame festival in Canton, Ohio, provides color enough against the deep blue sky. John Robinson made this shot with a Kodak pro D-SLR 14 and Nikon 24-120mm VR lens. Exposure was f/8 at 1/500 sec.

Seeking a creative approach to a popular subject, Terry Yarbrough made this shot outside Ouray, Colorado, with a Canon EOS 20D and Canon 17-40mm f/4 EF lens, then used Photoshop's "darken" blending mode and poster edges filter on it.
