Photokina in Cologne, Germany this week has been (largely) about high-end cameras and there’s not much higher-end than what Leica unveiled at the show: the S3 camera. We got some hands-one time with this 64MP medium format monster at photokina and have to say that if there’s one camera we dream about owning someday, this would be it!

After getting to shoot with the 64MP Leica S3, we paid a visit to the Phase One booth at the photokina show in Germany this week where we got a chance to try out the 150MP XF IQ4 medium format camera system. Notice a pattern here?

Fujifilm is trying to prove that big cameras can come in small packages. At the photokina show in Cologne, Germany today, Fujifilm announced the GFX 50R, a 51.4MP medium format digital camera in a relatively compact rangefinder-style mirrorless camera body. The GFX 50R is the followup to Fuji’s GFX 50S, https://www.shutterbug.com/content/hands-impressions-new-fujifilm-gfx-medium-format-mirrorless-camera which was announced at the last photokina show in 2016.

As I confidently predicted last time, you can’t possibly please everybody when it comes to picking the best, the greatest, or the most influential cameras ever made. After we posted our list of The Top 20 Greatest Cameras of All Time, it came as no surprise that we received a ton of emails, varying in tone from pugnacious condemnation, to anguish, to polite suggestion, all begging to differ with our first top ten choices.

Hasselblad is a storied named in photo history that’s been associated with high-end cameras and lenses for nearly two centuries. While that’s all well and good, the biggest question people have when they encounter the Swedish company’s newest digital medium format cameras is why the heck do these models cost so much?

Shutterbug, a member of the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA), once again joined forces with 30 other member magazines from around the world to choose the winners of the annual TIPA Awards for the best photo/imaging products in 40 different categories. The award process began in early 2017 with an initial selection of a wide range of products conducted by TIPA’s Technical Committee, on which Shutterbug’s Editor-at-Large George Schaub serves.

Hasselblad has embarked on a new frontier of hi-resolution imaging with the introduction of its H6D-400c MS multi-shot digital camera that captures 100MP images in the single shot or four-shot mode, and gigantic 400MP files when used in the six-shot mode. In addition to the incredible resolution, Hasselblad says the camera also raises the bar for image quality and accurate color rendition.

Another year has come and gone, which means it’s time for Shutterbug to once again pick our favorite cameras and lenses of the past 12 months. With so much great photo gear to choose from in 2017, it was a difficult task. The below list though is a good summation of the cameras and lenses Shutterbug’s editors and writers most enjoyed shooting with last year.

It’s that time of year again, when our friends at TheCameraStoreTV knock back a few drinks and reveal what they consider the “Best & Worst Photo/Video Gear of the Year.” If you saw our post from 2016, you know that these annual “awards” are informative and hilarious.

Norwegian Daniel Tengs sets himself apart from other extreme sports photographers in at least one key respect: he goes the extra mile, capturing snowboarders on medium format, namely the Fujifilm GFX 50S. Not exclusively, mind you, but with a certain flair so we can say his photo shoots with this format create a near mind-bending experience for the viewer.

Earlier this month DXOMark named Nikon’s D850 as the best camera they’ve ever tested, giving it their first-ever score of 100. It turns out that the D850’s reign was short-lived, as the Hasselblad X1 D medium format mirrorless camera just received a DXOMark score of 102.

You’d be hard-pressed to come up with three digital cameras more different from one another than the Canon EOS M5, the Fujifilm GFX 50S, and the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV. The first is an affordable, compact mirrorless camera, the second is a 50MP medium format mirrorless model, and the third is a big and powerful pro DSLR.
