Canon unleashed its newest flagship pro DSLR tonight: the long awaited 20.2-megapxiel Canon EOS-1D X Mark II. While this new flagship DSLR looks very similar to its predecessor, the Canon EOS-1D X from 2011, the Mark II has a numbdr of upgrades from that camera, which is still popular with pro photographers.

Without telling us why, Olympus ferried a number of the photo press to Austin, Texas last week, myself included. As it turned out, the purpose was to debut the new Olympus Pen-F Micro Four Thirds digital mirrorless camera ($1199.99, body only). We got to test out the new Olympus Pen-F for several days in Austin, and all I can say is, Wow!

Scott Serfas is one photographer who likes to get in on the action. In fact, he thrives on it. There is a certain amount of serendipity involved, but there is also a certain amount of passive control, in the sense that Serfas knows what to expect and expects the unexpected.

Phew, what a busy month it’s been for new photo gear! While the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas has not, traditionally, been a major event to debut high-end photography equipment, CES 2016 was definitely an exception with dozens of interesting imaging releases. (And hopefully this is a trend that continues at future CES events, which, in recent years have been rather ho-hum for photography gear.)

Olympus just took the wraps off its newest digital camera and it owes a lot to an analog predecessor. Called the Olympus PEN-F the 20-mepapixel mirrorless camera is the digital update to the original PEN-F “half frame” film camera from the 1960s.

The Leica SL (Typ 601) mirrorless camera system is designed to take on not just rival mirrorless cameras but to, potentially, lure pro DSLR users to switch to this high-end system, which combines what the company claims to be the fastest autofocus on the market with a speedy 11 fps burst rate and 4K video capture.

The scene is often just the starting point of a Deborah Sandidge photograph. “It’s visualization,” she says. “I’m looking at a scene and imagining what’s going to happen over time.” What was going to happen at the San Antonio, Texas, River Walk was the continuing passage of the water taxis. Sandidge knew they were the key to an expressive, dramatic photograph, one that would get as close as possible to picturing the passage of time.

Back in the days of film, many of us who considered ourselves “serious” photographers had an arsenal that not only included an SLR system with a myriad of lenses, flash equipment and other accessories, but a high–end pocket camera that offered a “premium” lens and a complete array of manual controls. The idea, of course, was that with one of these little wonders you would always have a capable camera on hand for those unexpected opportunities—even on days when you left your SLR at home.

Winter Storm Jonas is bearing down on our nation’s capitol and threatening to bury DC, Philly and maybe even New York City in snow this weekend. In fact, if you live anywhere east of Oklahoma, you’re probably charging batteries, restocking the liquor cabinet and laying in a good supply of unhealthy snacks that you can justify eating only during a weather emergency. But how do you plan to protect your camera when you venture out to capture the storm? Here are a few options.
