Today marks the launch of the second season of the “Nikon Behind the Scenes” video series. The second season starts with Nikon Ambassador (and wedding photographer) Cliff Mautner’s “Nikon Behind the Scenes: Wedding Day Portraits with Cliff Mautner.”

R. J. Kern is the owner and photographer of Kern-Photo, a Minneapolis-based wedding photography business. He started the company eight years ago after spending five years with the National Geographic Society. His wedding photography locations range from backyards to destinations around the world. He also teaches photography workshops and has won many awards, including making the “50 Top US Wedding Photographers”.

Our favorite weird lens guru Mathieu Stern has been testing out some unusual Soviet-era Russian lens and the results have been surprisingly impressive. In fact, in the below video, Stern pairs the Jupiter-9 85mm F/2 portrait lens on a Sony A7 II mirrorless camera and some of his still photos and video are actually quite amazing.

Westcott Now Offering Soft Box with Narrower Depth.

Westcott has recently made a new addition to its line of Soft Box Light Modifiers
by introducing the New Masters Brush. The New Masters allows users to create more
defined shadowing, which enhances depth and adds contour.



Westcott worked directly on the design with Master Photographer Ken Cook, a third
generation family studio owner with over 50 years of experience. The specially
designed multi layer front panel along with the Barn Door and internal baffle
creates a 2 f-Stop differential between the center or the heart of the light and
the outer edges. This allows users to achieve the lighting patterns created by
the old Masters of Photography using split, broad and short lighting, including
all the variations of Rembrandt and Butterfly Lighting.

The trend of using continuous light sources for portraiture that I saw at last year’s WPPI show continues unabated with Westcott’s Two-Light Daylight D5 Softbox Kit being the latest offering. The kit uses fluorescent bulbs as a light source, although that word barely appears in Westcott’s early press material for the kit. Part of the reason may be that when it comes to photographs of people, fluorescent has a negative connotation but nothing could be further from the truth.
