Nikon Inc. has announced pricing and availability for its D2X professional
digital SLR camera introduced at Photokina last year (see Jan, 2005 Shutterbug,

Nikon Inc. has announced version 4.3.1 updater of their Capture RAW (NEF) image
processing software. A complimentary copy of the update is available for current
users of version 4.2.x; if using version 4 that is earlier than 4.2, customers
must first upgrade to Version 4.2 and then install the new updater. All Version
4.x updaters are complimentary for owners of the full Version 4.0 and higher.
Upon installing the Capture 4.3.1 update, the D2X, D2HS, D70S, and D50 digital
SLR cameras, as well as earlier Nikon D-Series digital SLR cameras and their
NEF files will be supported. A highlight for the new updater is its significantly
faster performance for NEF operation. Depending upon the platform (Mac or PC),
CPU, and processes in use, this latest updater for Capture software delivers
increased processing speeds ranging from 11% up to 40%, compared to previous
versions.

A key component of Nikon's Total Imaging System, Capture software enables
photographers to perform comprehensive image processing and editing on NEF (RAW)
files produced by their Nikon digital SLR cameras as well as NEF files generated
from Nikon scanners or converted NEF files that have been generated from JPEG
or TIFF file formats. The NEF file structure has been idealized for operation
within the Nikon Total Imaging System. Key imaging data from the Nikon camera
is embedded within the NEF, and is available to strengthen the image processing
capabilities of Nikon Capture software. This nexus of Camera to NEF to Capture
embodies a key element of the Nikon Total Imaging System's ability to
optimize image quality.

From October 10-13, Nikon will sponsor 100 of the world's most promising young photojournalists in upstate New York for the 21st annual Eddie Adams workshop, also known as the “Barnstorm.” Seasoned professional photographers and photo editors will mentor the handpicked selection of students during the intense four-day workshop. This year, Barnstorm students will have the opportunity to try out Nikon’s new D3 and D700 professional digital SLR cameras as well as receive technical advice from Nikon experts available on-site.

“Nikon is proud to continue its tradition of educating the photographers and photojournalists of the future through the Eddie Adams Barnstorm Workshop,” said Bill Pekala, general manager of Nikon Professional Services, and Eddie Adams Workshop board member. “We at Nikon are honored to have the opportunity to provide these outstanding students with access Nikon's extensive line of high-quality cameras and precision lenses, as well as empower them with the photographic knowledge the world has come to expect from Nikon.”

To tailor the learning experience to the ever-changing industry, participants have access to a state-of-the-art digital photo and multimedia studio with all of the latest technologies. Additionally, Nikon will provide access to the D3 and new D700 digital SLR cameras, allowing these students to capture the world around them in stunning detail and clarity.

Barnstorm participants are the visionary photographers of tomorrow and will benefit from the experience and advice of professional mentors such as John White, Bill Epperidge, and Clay Patrick McBride. Other famous photographers available to Barnstorm participants include individuals from top-tier photojournalism publications such as National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Getty Images and The Associated Press.

During the workshop, the Barnstorm students are divided into ten teams, with each team paired with a photographer, an editor and a researcher. Each day consists of hands-on activities such as shooting and editing, as well as speeches and panel discussions. Over the course of the workshop, students are exposed to many types of photography including photojournalism, fine art photography, studio portraiture, underwater work, long-term projects, and conflict photography.

Following an overwhelmingly positive response the past two years, the multimedia workshop will continue as part of the core curriculum. With many news outlets and other publications expanding their offerings to include interactive slideshows and audio, students receive a crash course in the new media marketplace with access to the top multimedia editors in the country.

In addition to sponsoring the Barnstorm, this is the fifth year that Nikon will award a $10,000 scholarship to the top student from the Barnstorm XXI Workshop. A panel of judges selects a student based on the work he or she presents during the workshop. The scholarship money must be used by the winning student to further his or her education in the photographic arts field, and will be applied towards their tuition and/or housing at the college of attendance.

"For over 20 years, the Barnstorm Workshop has served as a vital tool for educating and inspiring the photographers of the future,” said Alyssa Adams, executive director, Eddie Adams Workshop. “With an alumni base of over 2,000 members, it is their continued passion and love for communicating through vivid imagery that has laid the foundation for this year's Barnstorm class and we are proud to continually renew the tenets of powerful photojournalism and photography."

It’s been almost exactly one year since Nikon created a buzz by unveiling a new series of three premium cameras with one-inch sensors and 4K video capability. This morning however, Nikon cancelled the delayed release of all three cameras in their highly anticipated DL Series.

Superzoom cameras, like Nikon’s Coolpix P1000 ($999.99) are popular because, let’s face it, people who buy entry level DSLR’s rarely, if ever, take the kit lenses off their cameras. I looked for statistics on this and didn’t find any empirical data but friendly retailers in the industry told me this assumption is true.

Nikon has introduced
the COOLPIX P5000 to the Nikon COOLPIX Performance Series of digital cameras.
The P5000 boasts 10 effective megapixels, a 3.5x Zoom-Nikkor glass lens, an optical
viewfinder, and a high resolution 2.5-inch LCD monitor with anti-reflection coating.
The P5000 incorporates a new advanced image processing engine, which optimizes
low light performance and color reproduction, and Nikon's optical VR image stabilization,
which compensates for camera shake.

The P5000 provides optical VR image stabilization, which helps compensate for
camera shake to produce sharper images. The VR stabilizes images displayed on
the 2.5-inch LCD, which makes it easier to frame and capture images. Another advantage
of the optical VR image stabilization is that it helps achieve smoother action
in the movie shooting modes of the P5000 and when using the optional TC-3ED Tele
converter with 378mm of telephoto performance.

The COOLPIX P5000 features a new advanced image processing engine with enhanced
noise reduction and an improved signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio that preserves image
quality even when shooting at high ISO settings. The P5000 extends the light sensitivity
range to ISO 3200, which makes it possible to capture fast moving subjects with
outstanding clarity, even in lower light conditions.

COOLPIX P5000 users can take advantage of the new mode dial which provides quick
access to a selection of 16 different scene-optimized modes, seven movie modes,
Anti-Shake mode and High Sensitivity mode. A turn of the mode dial to Anti-Shake
mode activates High ISO and Best Shot Selector (BSS) in addition to VR, which
automatically sets the optimal ISO for steady results and will allow users to
select and save the best image from up to ten sequential shots. In addition, the
mode dial has the choice of Programmed Auto [P], Shutter-priority Auto [S], Aperture-priority
Auto [A], and Manual [M] exposure modes for even greater camera control.

The COOLPIX P5000 features a new menu interface that makes navigating and selecting
images simple, while providing easy access to advanced functions for enhancing
and correcting images. This includes everything from the new image optimization
settings, which offer a choice of four color filters for shooting with monochrome
filter effects, to barrel distortion control, which can correct images when using
a wide-angle converter and can display the corrected image on the LCD in real
time.

The COOLPIX P5000 has three Nikon In-Camera Image Innovations to correct common
photo problems. This system includes Face-priority AF**, which can automatically
find and focus on a subject's face, In-Camera Red-Eye Fix, which automatically
corrects red-eye, and D-Lighting, an innovation that automatically creates a copy
of the image with detail added where necessary, but with well-exposed areas left
completely untouched. Because the P5000 has a 2.5-inch high resolution LCD monitor
with anti-reflection coating, viewing the monitor is easy even in bright sunlight.
The COOLPIX P5000 also features a new optical viewfinder for those photographers
who prefer a classic composition aid.

The COOLPIX P5000 is compatible with add-on system components to extend the user's
creative possibilities, including the 24mm Wide-angle lens Converter (WC-E67)
and the 378mm Telephoto Converter lens (TC-E3ED). A built-in accessory shoe supports
the use of Nikon's advanced i-TTL flash control for external flashes, including
the SB-400, SB-600, and SB-800 Speedlights.

The P5000 also comes with Nikon's PictureProject software. Powerful yet user-friendly
software makes transferring, organizing, editing and sharing photos easy. Furthermore,
the P5000 has PictBridge support and is compatible with SDHC cards.

The COOLPIX P5000 will be available nationwide in March 2007. The P5000 has an
MSRP of $399.95.

Jack Neubart  |  May 11, 2015  |

I’ve often wished I had a camera that could go from 24mm to 2000mm at the touch of a button and without being weighed down by a ton of glass. Okay, maybe not all the way to 2000mm and perhaps not in a power zoom, but you get my point. The Nikon Coolpix P900 superzoom (super-duper-zoom?) camera gives you that reach in a fairly compact body, relative to a lens with such a broad range of focal lengths.
