Watch Adam Savage Use a Band Saw to Remove a Stuck Lens Filter in This Cringe-Worth Video

Every photographer has at one time or another struggled to remove a jammed filter, either because it was threaded onto the lens too tightly or because the camera was dropped and the filter ring was damaged.

The typical solution is to coax off the filter off with a piece of rubber to improve one’s grip, a filter wrench, or a pair of Vice-Grip pliers. Not so Adam Savage of MythBusters fame, who decided to skip the kid stuff and go all in with an industrial band saw.

As you’ll see in the cringe-worthy video below, Savage’s fearless approach may have had something to do with the fact that the lens wasn’t his, but rather belonged to a member of his Tested crew. Poor Norm who dropped his camera and damaged the filter ring had to helplessly stand by and watch the surgery.

Did it work? Watch the video and find out. You can find more interesting experiments on Savage’s Tested YouTube channel, and be sure to look at our recent post discussing whether or not you should use UV filters.

I loved this video, but HOW did the filter get screwed on so tightly in the first place?
