Sundance Photographic Workshop students aiming for great shots at the Cowboy Poetry Gathering and Buckaroo Fair

Students at the November 8-12 Sundance Photographic Workshop will have a unique opportunity to capture performers backstage at the 2007 Cowboy Poetry Gathering and Buckaroo Fair in Heber City, Utah. The popular event--billed as a celebration "to promote the cowboy way of life through music, poetry and art"--annually draws visitors from around the world.

Directing the Sundance Photographic Workshop students will be Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist Martha Rial, who will be teaching a session on documentary and photojournalism.

"This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for photographers and photo students," said Hilary Cole, Sundance Photographic Workshop General Manager. "Through their art, these talented performers are helping to preserve our unique Western culture, and they're continuing traditions that are vital national treasures. To have behind-the-scenes access while the cowboys meet, rehearse and share stories will be an experience our students will never forget."

Workshop instructor Martha Rial won the Pulitzer Prize in 1998 for her photographs of refugees in war-torn Burundi and Rwanda. Her course, "Storytelling with Images," will be her only workshop appearance of the year.

In addition to leading students during the Cowboy Poetry Gathering, Ms. Rial will offer instruction on idea development, research techniques and source cultivation for documentary and photojournalism projects. Student photographers will learn how to combine information and visual impact to document human events. Ms. Rial is currently a staff photographer for The St. Petersburg Times.

The November workshop also includes Andrew Hudson, noted photographer and self-publisher, who will lead an in-depth course entitled "Successful Self-Publishing." From choosing a subject and format to distribution and marketing, this course teaches the necessary tools and tips for promoting images through self-publishing. Students will learn all the elements of creating, printing and selling their own large-format coffee table book.

About the Sundance Photographic Workshop
The Sundance Photographic Workshop is entering its third year of hiring world-class photographers to teach students in the 4-star, 6,000-acre Sundance Resort in Utah. The resort's picturesque setting offers an inspirational backdrop for the Sundance Photographic Workshops. Classes are held in Sundance's spacious function facilities, as well as in-field excursions to capture outdoor, environmental portrait and once in a lifetime photographic opportunities. Small class sizes enable wide access to one-on-one instruction and daily courses are complemented with after-dinner presentations of instructor and student photo portfolios.

The all-inclusive fee includes comfortable lodging in private mountainside cottages, as well as a complete meal plan that includes gourmet dining in The Tree Room, recipient of the prestigious AAA Four-Diamond award and the Wine Spectator award.

Originally called Timphaven, the Sundance Resort is an artistic, cultural and recreational community founded in 1969 by actor Robert Redford. The resort was recently voted #6 among U.S. resorts by Condé Nast Traveler -- and #1 among mountain resorts. It also served as the original home for the renowned Sundance Film Festival before its growing fame dictated its relocation to nearby Park City.
