Fellow photographers, we were blessed with a bumper crop of cool new stuff in 2024. I'm including lenses and software in this roundup, but not cameras. Here are 13 of the absolutely best products I had a chance to play with last year. I snuck in a mildly controversial number 14 at the end because I couldn't resist.

We couldn’t stump you with 13 general photography questions last week, so let’s see how you do on a lens quiz. Answers at the end—peeking is for haters only.

Photography relies on science as much as art, and to be successful, photographers have to know a lot of things. Some of the requisite knowledge falls into the category of common sense and some is acquired through the indispensable combination of training and practice. And every once in awhile we stumble upon a nugget that can only be described as dumb luck. It was dumb luck that led me a few years ago to a website I want to share with you.

Camera store employees can be opinionated—to put it kindly. They often make up jokes about the brands of cameras and lenses they consider inferior. Some can be vicious. Here are a few of my favorites. We’re using the mythical Sputnik brand for our examples.

We put three brands of UV filters through a very basic, real-world test. The brands we tested are K&F Concept, Urth and Okko. Never heard of them? Us neither, before this. Here is our report.

From Italy, the UK and good old New Jersey USA, here is a trio of camera straps that should be on your radar.

There were so many three-legged accessory creatures at the last Photo Plus Expo in New York that for a moment I thought I was at a petting zoo in Chernobyl. Seriously—I dreamed I was surrounded by a herd of tripedal giraffes with skinny, hairless legs. The experience made me realize that for most photographers, choosing the right tripod is more difficult than searching for the right emoji on a smartphone while wearing mittens. Henceforth and therefore, here’s a non-zoological look at a trio of terrific tripods.

Making an avoidable mistake can cost you a great shot, your precious inner tranquility, and sometimes cold cash. But there are a few goofs that I hope I’ve learned to steer clear of.

Photojournalist as conquering hero and Hollywood glamour photographer as sleazebag, TV and radio shows from the recent past portray cameramen as predictable-but-likable stereotypes. Thanks to YouTube and SiriusXM we can still enjoy the exploits of these 1950s photogs.

Three very different, very exciting camera bags—one shoulder, one photo backpack and one waist pack. Considering the variety of clever designs, abundance of high quality materials and outright affordability, there’s probably never been a better time to buy a camera bag. (Except maybe during that two-year period back in the middle of the Pleistocene epoch when cheap Diprotodon skin from Australia was flooding the market…)
