The portrait is one of the most demanding of all photographic tasks. We are asked to capture the character of a person in the brief, fleeting moment it takes to make an exposure. Painters seem to have the advantage, being able to take hours or days to render their impressions. They can block out forms and fill in the light and shadow as they see fit. What do we have to contend...

The 90mm f/2.2 Leitz Thambar is one of those few lenses that is always prefixed "legendary." Designed primarily for portraiture, it was introduced in 1935 in Leica screw fitting, 39mmx26 tpi. It seems to have been discontinued during World War II, although there are scattered reports of...

Impressed by her wonderful images, we talked about business every chance we could that week. I was quite surprised to learn that Sholin was working with a rep, usually a business relationship reserved...

Ansel Adams once told me that it is the background that makes or breaks the image. The background is what will tie all the key elements of a photograph together. I learned very early in my career that it's true whether you're shooting large format landscapes or even if you're shooting digital senior...

"Geez, Tim, your photo gear alone is heavier than my entire backpack!" This was a fellow backpacker I met in Glacier National Park. She was exaggerating...I hope. But it is certainly true that adding a lot of photography equipment to a loaded camping backpack adds significant weight.

Fine art printmakers and their customers will soon have a guarantee on the longevity
of certain Epson fine art prints through Epson's new UltraGiclée(tm)
print certification program. This certification will enable printmakers to sell
their work and enable customers to buy these prints with confidence that the
prints will last.

UltraGiclée certified fine art prints, which can only be created on selected
Epson professional printers using select professional media and EPSON UltraChrome(tm)
ink, will be warranted to resist noticeable fading for 80 years from the original
date of purchase when the print is printed, framed, handled and displayed according
to warranty conditions. If a warranted print fades, Epson will provide the ink
and paper needed to make a replacement print. Current certified printers include
the EPSON Stylus Pro 4000, 7600 and 9600 printers, and certified media include
UltraSmooth(tm) Fine Art Paper, Textured Fine Art Paper and PremierArt(tm) Water
Resistant Canvas for Epson.

Wilhelm Imaging Research (www.wilhelm-research.com)
has independently tested the printers, inks and papers used in Epson's UltraGiclée
certification program for the fine art, fine art reproduction and fine art photography
industries. Final prints made according to the program's specifications will
be registered and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.

In order to earn UltraGiclée certification, printmakers will attend a
training class on proper printing and finishing techniques. Classes will be
offered starting in late spring in various cities across the country. Details
will be available at www.epson.com/ultragiclee
beginning March 14.
