Underwater Camera Survives Three Months On Ocean Floor (PHOTOS)

The oceans are vast and mysterious and experienced divers know that the ever-shifting sands hide (or reveal) treasures all the time. In March, a memeber of the Scuba Monster diving team (based in Hong Kong) made a remarkable discovery. In an instance of strange luck, photographer John Ng came across a lost Nauticam underwater camera housing (with a Panasonic Lumix GH4 inside) while on a drive trip in the Maldives.

And here's the kicker: the Panasonic GH4 still worked!

At a depth of 18.5 meters, Ng spotted an oddly shaped object resting among the rocks and sand so he decided to explore it further. With some effort, he was able to free the camera from the sea bottom and brought it back to the boat for a closer inspection.

The durable Nauticam NA-GH4 housing was clearly a victim of the ravages of the ocean but it did its job amazingly well, protecting the Panasonic GH4 camera locked inside.

Left with the question of how the camera came to be here Ng took note of the housing’s serial number. As luck would have it, also on board the ship that day was an employee of Nauticam China.

The Nauticam employee used that serial number to locate the camera’s owner and solved the mystery. It appears that a diver from Malaysia lost the camera while on a dive in December of 2014.

The camera and its housing are now in the hands of Nauticam and will soon be returned to their owner. And who knows, the lucky Panasonic GH4 could be out filming the ocean's depths again soon!
