Greg Gorman Retrospective

Sohn Fine Art is pleased to present A Distinct Vision: A 40 year retrospective of works by award winning photographer Greg Gorman as part of the Master Artist Series (MAS).

The exhibition will be on view at Sohn Fine Art Gallery, 6 Elm Street, Stockbridge, MA, July 5th -September 30th, 2013, with an artist's reception Saturday, July 20th, 4:00 - 8:00. The exhibition features a curated selection of Gorman's nudes and celebrity portraits highlighting Gorman's impressive 40 year career. In conjunction with the exhibition, a public artist's presentation and book signing will be held at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center, Great Barrington, MA on July 18th at 7pm. Also, 2 one-day artist led workshops ("Mastering Portraits" and "Nudes") July 21 and 22, 2013, and one Critique Day Workshop July 23, 2013, will be held at Cranwell Resort, Spa & Golf Club. Sign up for workshops at Sohn Fine Art.

In the course of his career, Gorman has photographed some of the leading creative personalities of our time, including Andy Warhol, Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jeff Koons, Helen Mirin, Al Pacino, and Meryl Streep.
"For me a photograph is most successful when it doesn't answer all the questions," says Gorman, "and it leaves something to the imagination."

A Distinct Vision comes to Sohn Fine Art and the Berkshires after touring museums and galleries throughout Europe and the near east. In addition to featuring a selection of Gorman's celebrity portraits, A Distinct Vision will include a selection of Gorman's black and white, male and female nudes. Each of Gorman's photographs portrays a picture of human nature in its infinite range. A true master with lighting and composition, Gorman's strength also lies in his charismatic ability to get his subjects to open up to him, thereby creating a rare opportunity for the viewer to see the unique qualities of that person, as well as share a special, and often private, moment that Gorman has captured. In addition to Gorman's many awards, he was just the rerecipient of the 2013 Professional Photographers of America (PPA) Lifetime Achievement Award.

"I am so proud that through the Master Artist Series, we are able to bring Greg to the Berkshires," says Sohn Fine Art owner and Master Artist Series founder Cassandra Sohn. "Usually one would have to travel to a major city to get this kind of experience with an artist of his caliber. To have these events here is such a great asset to the regions cultural offerings."

Gorman will be the second photographer to be featured as part of the 2013 Master Artist Series (MAS), which exists to bring Master Photographers to the Berkshires for a series of exhibitions, presentations and workshops. More information about MAS can found at www.sohnfineart.com.

Those interested in learning more about Gorman's process and career are invited to attend the artist led lecture and book signing at the Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center, Great Barrington, MA, July 18th, 2013 at 7pm. Gorman will discuss his career as an analog photographer in the world of celebrity as well as his transition to digital photography. Accompanying this discussion, Greg will present a visual presentation of his imagery spanning his 40 plus year career. Included in that will be his award winning motion picture campaigns, a commercial body of work called We The People, as well as images from his two most recent books Framed and In Their Youth. In closing, Greg will discuss the pursuit of his current passions for wine and education. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $12 for students, and may be purchased at www.mahaiwe.org.

Artists and photographers are invited to join Gorman for two one-day artist led workshops ("Mastering Portraits" and "Nudes") and a "Critique Day" workshop to be held on July 21st, July 22nd and July 23rd. Workshops will be based in the Meadowview building at Cranwell Resort, Spa & Golf Club in Lenox, MA. The workshops will include an intimate preview of Gorman's works and influences, a critique of each participant's imagery, and photographing at locations throughout the Berkshires. Greg will focus heavily on pushing each individual's communications skills to create the trust and confidence between the photographer and the subject to finally create that connected portrait. Greg's intention at the end of the day will be for the student to be able to see and understand light and communicate with the talent in order to achieve their desired goals. Interested participants may find more information and register at www.sohnfineart.com. Early registration is recommended, as participation is limited.
