Judging
Nineteen recognized professionals in the field of press photography worldwide are judging the entries at the World Press Photo office in Amsterdam from 29 January until 10 February 2011.

Chair:
David Burnett, USA, photojournalist and founding member Contact Press Images

David Burnett, chair of the jury, advises participating photographers: “Don’t send in something just because you shot it. Look at your work with a sharp eye. Don’t get tempted by fond or fuzzy memories, because the jurors will not have those. Be your own toughest editor. If you’re not tough on yourself, we will be. One bad picture in a story takes away the merit of two good ones.”

The jury will give first, second and third prizes in all categories. First prize winners in each category will receive a cash prize of €1,500. The premier award, the World Press Photo of the Year, carries a cash prize of €10,000.

The prizewinning pictures are presented in an exhibition that travels to around 100 cities in 45 countries, starting in Amsterdam at the end of April. In addition, a yearbook published in six languages offers an insight into the winning pictures.

In the 2010 contest, 5,847 photographers from 128 countries participated submitting a total of 101,960 photographs.

World Press Photo receives support from the Dutch Postcode Lottery and is sponsored worldwide by Canon and TNT.
