During a Canon event today before the start of the photokina show in Cologne, Germany tomorrow, we got some hands-on time with the long awaited Canon EOS 7D Mark II. Even though our time with the 7D II was brief — we were pretty much loaned the camera and allowed to shoot for a few minutes — we got a pretty good sense of how this APS-C-based digital SLR performs. In short, it’s feels like a mini machine gun.

Though it was announced late last month, the new 24-megapixel Pentax KP DSLR made its official debut at the WPPI show in Las Vegas this week and we put our grubby little paws all over this compact yet rugged APS-C sensor-based DSLR.

There's a lot to consider when shopping for a used camera. Yes, the price might be nice, but how can you help ensure that what you've buying is not damaged goods, among other things.

The big CES show in Las Vegas wrapped up over the weekend but there are still a few tidbits of photo gear news trickling out of the event. The biggest CES headlines for photographers were several interesting product announcements from Nikon including the unveiling of the full frame Nikon D5 pro DSLR and the APS-C sensor-based Nikon D500 and photo enthusiasts.

It’s been a long time coming and now it’s finally here. Or, at least, very close to it. Pentax unveiled its long awaited K-1 full-frame DSLR last month and now Ricoh, Pentax’s parent company, has posted five sample images shot with the 36.4-megapixel K-1.

Most of the tutorials we post about macro photography concentrate on shooting techniques and the best type of gear to use. Today, we’re switching things up, with what one pro says are the best camera settings to use.

This time of year many photographers are thinking about upgrading their gear. When choosing a new camera, it usually comes down to your budget and the type of photography you do most.

It's taken Canon a while, but the company has finally introduced a new flagship professional DSLR: the EOS-1D X Mark III, which adds a bevy of new photo and video features while keeping the camera's resolution essentially the same as its four-year-old predecessor. The 20.1-megapixel full frame Canon 1D X Mark III is the successor to the 20.2MP 1D X Mark II from 2016 and while both cameras look similar, there are many changes "under the hood" to the new Mark III.

If you’re a regular on this page, you know that we don’t subscribe to the notion that Manual Mode is the only way to go if you’re serious about photography. In fact, we recently posted a tutorial in which one pro insisted that Aperture Priority Mode is often a better choice.

Many of you are familiar with the Eve Arnold quote, “It is the photographer, not the camera, that is the instrument.” But let’s face it: If you haven’t set up your camera correctly, it’s pretty difficult to capture great photographs.

There’s an old saying that you’re not a “real photographer” until you switch the camera’s mode dial from Auto to Manual. While we think that notion is somewhat overblown, there are definitely advantages to manual photography.

Are you seeing random spots and squiggly lines on your photos? If so, it’s time to clean your camera’s sensor and employ some simple preventative measures so it doesn’t get dirty again.

One of the products that flew under the radar when Nikon introduced the now widely acclaimed D850 DSLR about a year ago was the Nikon ES-2 Digitizing Adapter ($150), which works in concert with the D850 to turn 35mm slides and negatives into digital images. We haven’t gotten a chance to try it ourselves, but photographer David Flores has, and in the below video he gives you a step-by-step demonstration of how it works.
