Photo Gadgets & Goodies: Viddy DIY Pinhole Camera Kit

This item is a real blast from the past, one that goes all the way back to the early days of photography.

Just because this camera kit is retro chic doesn’t mean it isn’t fun (and very educational) for all ages. The Viddy from Photojojo is a fully functional pinhole camera made from durable (screen printed to make it look like a real camera) cardboard that you build yourself.

The process is easy: simply pop out the various bits and pieces and assemble your very own Viddy in about 30 minutes. This is a great project to to with your family, in the classroom, with a Scout Troop or a photo club. (The kit also includes a reclaimed medium format spool.)

Load the Viddy with either standard 35mm or medium format 120mm film, then point the camera at your subject and open the shutter for a few seconds to take a photograph. Experiment with exposure times and search the net for pinhole camera techniques for even more fun. The Viddy camera kit sells for $64; the 35mm Kodak film (ISO 400/24 exposures) is just $6.
