Nikon Says It's Developing New Nikon D5 Pro DSLR, SB-5000 Speedlight and WT-6 Wireless Transmitter

In a short press announcement this morning, Nikon said it's developing a forthcoming full frame (aka FX-format) professional DSLR called the Nikon D5. The D5 would be the follow-up to the 16-megapixel full frame Nikon D4S, which was announced in February 2014.

Other than announcing the development of the D5, which Nikon is calling its “next generation of professional FX-format DSLRs,” virtually no other info on the forthcoming camera was revealed this morning. Nikon offered no specifications on the D5 and no details on when the camera would come to market or what the price would be.

There were also no images included in the press announcement of the Nikon D5. (The above photo is a generic shot of Nikon’s DSLR lineup.)

In some ways, this was an oddly timed announcement from Nikon, considering that it could cause photographers to hold off buying the Nikon D4S as they wait for the forthcoming D5 to come to market. (As of today, the D4S was still being offered online and in camera stores for a list price of $5,999.95.)

Nikon also announced this morning it is developing the SB-5000 Speedlight, which will become Nikon’s flagship Speedlight, as well as the development of the new WT-6 Wireless Transmitter.

Nikon said details about all these forthcoming imaging products would “be announced at a future date and time.”
