Sony Intros the a6500: A New Flagship APS-C Camera with Blazing AF Speed & Pro Video

This morning Sony introduced a new flagship mirrorless camera, the a6500, which claims to have the world’s fastest AF speed and the highest number of AF points with in-camera 5-axis image stabilization. The a6500 features Sony’s acclaimed 4D Focus system, which can acquire focus in a mere 0.05 seconds.

The new a6500, which is the follow-up to the a6300 that Sony launched last February, also boasts touch-screen AF operation, a 24.2-megapixel Exmor CMOS sensor and a host of professional video capabilities. The Sony a6500 features 425 phase detection AF points and an expanded buffer that enables shooting at 11fps for up to 307 frames. The camera is Sony’s first APS-C model to offer the benefits of advanced in-body stabilization, with a shutter speed advantage of approximately five steps. The stabilization benefits work with a variety of lenses, including E-mount lenses without Optical SteadyShot and A-mount lenses when used with a compatible adapter.

Touch screen capabilities are available for both focus-point selection and adjustment. The LCD screen can be used as a touch pad simply by dragging a finger across the screen to shift your focus point. The Sony a6500’s video capabilities include internal 4K movie recording in the popular Super 35mm format, the ability to record full HD at 120 fps up to 100 Mbps, and a Slow and Quick mode that supports both slow motion and quick motion.
