This Landscape Pro Reveals His Secrets for Using Telephoto and Wide-Angle Lenses (VIDEO)

There’s a common misconception that all you need for landscape photography is a good wide-angle lens. And while it’s true that a wide perspective is great for capturing expansive vistas, experienced shooters know that short telephoto lenses are also important for landscape photography.

Adam Gibbs is a professional landscape photographer, known for his stunning images of Western Canada. In this tutorial, he explains when and why he uses telephoto and wide-angle lenses, and he reveals his secrets for making the most of both.

Gibbs made this tutorial while photographing Cathedral Grove on Vancouver Island. To demonstrate his landscape techniques, he uses a Nikon D850 full-frame DSLR, along with an AF-S Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8G ED wide-angle zoom, and an AF-S Nikkor 24-120mm f/4G ED VR lens that spans a range from wide angle to short telephoto. As you’ll see, he takes a different approach with each of the lenses to use them most effectively.

Composition techniques and the way you use light are both important considerations that often vary greatly, depending upon the focal length of the lens in use. You’ll see Gibbs photograph different scenes with both of his lenses, while explaining the approach he takes. Gibbs note that these images have yet to be processed, and are provided for the purpose of focal length comparison.
