Full Frame: The Story Behind the Image

Randy Duchaine captured this visually detailed environmental portrait of Bread & Puppet Theater founder Peter Schumann in 2006 for a project on people who create unique experiences or things.

“It was shot in an old dairy farm in Vermont, which is the group’s museum, and Peter showed up barefoot and gave me five minutes,” Duchaine explains. “The museum is a collection of all their puppets and props from the last 50 years.”

He photographed it with a Canon EOS 5D at f/8, 1/4 second, ISO 400. Duchaine lit it with a Lowel Rifa-Lite placed at a 45-degree angle above Schumann, just out of the shot: “The light naturally falls off and is slightly darkened in Photoshop.”
