Friday Fun: Look at These Photos of an Incredibly Large Maine Coon Cat Named Lotus

Maybe it’s because our beloved Maine Coon cat named Rufus passed away this year, but I can’t get enough of the Lotus the Main Coon Intagram page, which features photos of a giant floofy feline. Our Maine Coon was a classic gray but Lotus, as you can see, is a lovely mix of white and orange.

If you’ve never heard of the Main Coon, it’s one of the largest and most popular domesticated cat breeds. Some say the breed came to North America when a ship commissioned by Marie Antoinette for her (unsuccessful) escape attempt from France, capsized off the coast of Maine. Six of her favorite Turkish Angora cats made it to shore and bred with other domestic short hairs to create the Main Coon, which has been referred to as “The Gentle Giant.”

I don’t know about gentle – our cat was quite frisky (though friendly) – but Maine Coons certainly are the giants of the cat world. In fact, the Guinness world record for the longest cat of all time was held by a Main Coon named Stewie who measured 48.5 inches from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail. Main Coons can also weigh up to 35 pounds.
