Backyard Bird Photos: EVERYTHING You Need to Know (VIDEO)

This is a great time of year to photograph our feathered friends, and as you’ll see in this comprehensive tutorial, with the proper skill you needn’t travel further than your own backyard to make some truly spectacular images.

Unlike the brief instructional videos we typically post, this episode is a 90-minute webinar that you can watch at your leisure in the comfort of your home. It’s sort of like attending a free workshop, without the traveling, and you can watch it all at once, or a bit at a time.

Brought to you by B&H Photo Video, photographer Michael Corrado shares his extensive knowledge of bird photography, while illustrating his advice with a selection of amazing images. Whether you’ve photographed birds before, or you’re just getting started, this webinar will definitely up your game.

After a quick retrospective of his work, Corrado jumps into the topic at hand, covering everything from gear selection, camera settings, shooting techniques and more. As he says, the fundamentals of photography don’t change, whether you’re shooting landscapes, concerts, sports or, in this case, birds.

Corrado explains that he began this particular journey with a love of birds. And one key to his success is an ongoing study of his subjects. He notes that by understanding birds, and how they interact, you’ll be able to anticipate what’s about to happen—a very important skill.

Throughout the tutorial, Corrado challenges you to constantly think about your camera settings, and recognize when it’s time to change modes—like switching from color to b&w. You also pick up valuable tips on exposure, focus, drive modes, and other key settings.

Of course there’s plenty of artistry that contributes to great imagery, and Corrado shares plenty of that so you can expand your vision. So grab a notepad and pencil, find a comfortable chair, and jump into this extremely helpful video.
