There’s a new trend in camera carriers that appeals to photographers who want to look chic while still maintaining the core functionality of the bag. In terms of style they are at polar opposites to rugged backpacks or gear-laden roller bags, yet even the most stylish camera bag has to carry gear in a practical and organized fashion. That includes being built to withstand the rigors of being jostled or bumped in crowds, and being constructed to protect against spilled drinks, or rain at the very least. At the same time, the ideal bag should be built to carry everything we may need on a shoot, and then some.

CP+ 2012—the Camera & Photo Imaging Show--opened on February 9 and ran through the 12th in Yokohama, Japan. There were 65,120 visitors. Following are some news highlights from the show.
No More “Mirrorless”
On 9 February 2012, Mr. Makoto Kimura, The Representative Director of CIPA, announced at the opening speech that: “We will no longer use the nomenclature (mirrorless camera). Instead, we will adopt ‘non-reflex camera’ for this category”.
CIPA used to divide digital cameras into two categories, “fixed lens camera” and “interchangeable lens camera”, the latter being further divided into two subcategories, “single lens reflex camera” and “mirrorless camera”. From now on, the latter of these two subcategories will be changed to “non-reflex camera”. Mr. Kimura added that CIPA will not force the members to use this new terminology, but will leave it to the discretion of individual member companies as to which terminology to use. He has stressed that this new terminology was coined for the use in the statistics that CIPA will publicise, and merely as an antonym of the single lens reflex camera.
The AirBox is the first wind-resistant softbox, utilizing wind tunnel technology
with light dispersion technology, giving the photographic industry the first wind resistant light
modifier on the market.
The internal air flow system guides the air through the box - the open holes in the front allow air
to flow through the softbox. Users can regulate air flow by opening and closing the air vents on
the side of the softbox as needed. As you open the vents, you are also regulating the light value
of the softbox. The inner air flow baffle helps provide light dispersion throughout the box.
Remove the inner baffle and create a hot spot with a vignette.

I don’t have to light up rooms or freeze fast action very often—travel photography doesn’t usually call for that, and, besides, I really prefer to shoot in natural light. Fortunately, most of the time I can, but there are instances when a flash will make the difference in a picture by narrowing the scene’s contrast range, making it possible for the camera’s sensor to capture the details in shadow and highlight areas. Often flash is the only way for me to make a picture, as I don’t have the luxury of coming back when the light is better.

While visiting the small island of Kökar in the Åland archipelago in Finland, I found this weathered fishing boat. This old boat tells a story of many years ago when herring fishing on Kökar was in its prime. No longer in use, the boat reminds us of the rich history of the island when hardy fishermen led courageous lives on the sea. Photographing the boat in early morning light, I was able to capture the nuances of its story. Since my ancestors originated from here, the boat gave a glimpse into my own history.
