In a move that is sure to spark outrage amongst nature and wildlife photographers, the U.S. Forest Service wants photographers to pay for a $1,500 permit if they plan to shoot images on Federally-owned wilderness areas. Permits would be required even if you’re shooting images or video with a smartphone.

Adobe has announced Photoshop Elements 13 and Premiere Elements 13, which are the latest versions of Adobe’s popular consumer photo and video editing software. Filled with a variety of new creative features and tools, Adobe Photoshop Elements 13 and Premiere Elements 13 are designed to be fun, easy to use and affordable. The new Elements Live portal (found within the software) is an educational tool that offers users a constant supply of fresh tips, tricks and inspiration designed to enhance their image-editing skills—from beginner to advanced level and beyond.

Designed with many of the same features that made the original Odin so popular, the Phottix Odin II TTL UI and control system are now faster and easier to use. This updated model offers a 2.5 GHz frequency (with a range of 100m), 32 channels (with a digital ID code), 5 groups (A, B, C, D, E), group buttons and a convenient control dial for fast power changes, a manual power control (1/1 to 1/256), a flash zoom control, high speed sync (up to 1/8000s), an AF assist beam, a modeling light control (Indra500 only), second curtain sync and a TTL power control +/- 3EV.

If you are an aficionado of the rich tones and subtle gradations of fine black and white and toned images, Tonality Pro 1.0 from Macphun is a tool you will want to try. For Mac only,  the Tonality black-and-white photo converter is available as a stand-alone and as a plug-in for Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, and Elements, as well as Apple Aperture.

Fujifilm was showing off its new toys at photokina today and we got some hands-on time with these latest X-series cameras and lenses. Initially announced on September 10th, the Fujifilm X100T and XT-1 Graphite Silver cameras, and Fujinon XF50-140mm F2.8 R LM OIS WR and XF56mm F1.2 R APD lenses continue to build on Fuji’s compact and retro-style (Fuji would say “classic" style) X-Series line.

Phase One released Version 8 of its Capture One Pro at photokina this morning and the updated imaging software features a host of new tools designed to better process and edit Raw photo files. Phase One also said there’s a new subscription plan available for Capture One Pro 8 though, unlike the latest version of Adobe’s Photoshop, you can still buy the software outright.

The Hasselblad H5D-50c has been revamped, offering a new built-in Wi-Fi module that allows users to connect Hasselblad’s Phocus Mobile software (via an iPhone or iPad) directly to the camera, enabling photographers to browse their images and control the camera without the need for a computer. Designed for flexibility and ultimate image quality, the updated model offers all of the functionality of its sibling including a 50-megapixel CMOS sensor and high ISO performance (ISO 100 - 6400).
