Scale, or Why I Thought the Pentax Q7 Was Bigger

Like you, I’d seen pictures of the Pentax Q7 and the Q model before it. I knew it was small because people told me so. But I had no idea how small it truly is until I held one in my hands. This thing could hide inside a box of cough drops.

Okay, I’m exaggerating. It’s not that small. But it is tiny. Putting a neck strap on the Q7 is like putting a choke collar and chain on a mouse. The ideal tether would be a Wapiti wrist strap or maybe something that converts from a neck strap to a wrist strap on a whim. But I’m getting ahead of myself.

Despite its diminutive dimensions, the Pentax Q7 is a powerful, fully-featured camera with sharp interchangeable lenses and an image sensor that works great in low light. Basic configuration includes 23-69mm Pentax Q-Mount lens (35mm equiv.), a 3-inch LCD and in-camera image stabilization. Add to that Full HD 1080p video, ISO options up to 12800 and 5-fps burst shooting capability and you have quite a package. I saved the best for last: it can shoot RAW and RAW+JPEG, so even the most discriminating dilettantes among us will be delighted.

By the way, order the Pentax Q7 in black; that will save you several hours of hand-wringing decision making. The Pentax Q7 is available in 120 colors and color combinations. This translates to 20 body colors and 6 grip colors. Pink body, yellow grip? Sure, if you can stomach it. Metallic green body, brown grip? Yes, and it goes well with my camouflage M65 Field Jacket.

Before you ask, “Why?” consider “Why not?” Check out the color picker on the Ricoh website and you’ll find that there is a color combination for everyone. Take a look, then comment on this blog and tell us all which combination suits your fancy. I can tell you right now, it’s yellow-yellow for me.
