Pixmantec’s RawShooter Premium 2006; A Third-Party Raw Converter Page 2

RAW File Comparisons
Quite often you'll want to compare two or more images for best quality, composition, and content. RSP allows us to compare up to four images (although with three or four images they will be quite small). If you zoom in and use the navigation frame the images will pan in synchronized fashion.

RSP Tonality Controls
Fine-tuning the tonality of any image is one of the key tasks of any image-editing program. The Curves/Levels functionality of RSP is pretty standard now with most raw converters. But the three sliders--Fill Light, Shadow Contrast, and Highlight Contrast--are kind of new. Fill Light matches the functionality found in Photoshop's "Shadow/Highlight" tool, and this is often quite helpful. We also like to use the "Highlight Contrast" to tone down aggressive highlights. All these tonality controls can be used in conjunction with one another.

RSP Noteworthy Bonus Features
· "Vibrance" is a nice alternative to normal saturation. If used in moderation, Vibrance is more useful than standard global saturation.
· Magnification loupe (helps to inspect details without zooming in)
· Crop
· Custom Appearance settings
· Image upsizing/downsizing

Conclusion
RawShooter Premium 2006 is a new, serious raw converter. It combines excellent image quality with a very modern workflow. Unfortunately, RSP is not available for the Mac platform, and we don't see this happening in the near future. If you work with raw files (and there are many good reasons to do so) you owe it to yourself to give RSP a shot. It's available as a 15-day free trial at www.pixmantec.com. The full version costs $99.
