The poetic chaos of the dead flies mashed against the windscreen, the stout, unwavering flags, the weigh station, which may or may not have permitted our passage, and the laughably out of place Birchenough Bridge caught my attention. Like a streak of lightning, suddenly, the flies became allegorical, and the flag, despite its small stature, took on the stately aplomb of a political leader, and the bridge too became something else in my imagination. And suddenly, the value attached to each object began to fluxuate as the scene pretzeled itself into a symphony of additional representations and meanings.
