Ever wonder if that 2nd hand camera you purchased online was stolen? Well, now there is a way to find out before you buy. RegisterYourCamera.com is a free online service for registering your photographic equipment. If someone steals your camera, simply enter the serial number and a description into the online database and your done. When someone searches on stolen serial numbers, your item will then be listed. Sounds simple enough, yet it could be very effective in helping track your missing item.

Registeryourcamera.com is the brainchild of former Intel software engineer who is an avid photographer. In due time and with good word of mouth, this website will become a very good resource for the everyday photographer engaging in online sales and purchases. The site offers secure encrypted transactions for Logging in and membership registration. No personal data is required other than your email and name. The serial number of your item is only required if you want to report the item as stolen. In addition to the basic registry, you can generate and email reports of your registered items. Let’s start with the cheapest Large Format (LF) camera at the show, and, as far as I am concerned, the one that is likely to be of the most interest to the largest number of our readers: the Bulldog 10x8” camera (also available in 8x10” for the American market—it’s a reversing back and can be used either way). The UK price is £250, which means that although a...

Although digicams with built-in lenses still outsell D-SLRs by 10 to 1, market research indicates that 20 percent of consumers are planning to upgrade to an interchangeable-lens camera. As a result, most manufacturers are devoting significant R&D efforts to the D-SLR category, and we found some really desirable new cameras at photokina. The trend was toward more of the high-tech...

The primary emphasis was on D-SLRs during the photokina 2008 show, but many new digicams with integral lenses were introduced, including some inexpensive models strictly for quick snapshooting. While those may find eager buyers, I’ll concentrate on cameras intended for the photo enthusiast. In these categories, only a few trends became obvious, starting with resolution: 13- and 14-megapixel...

Zacuto's DSLR Baseplate Kits are said to be the new standard for DSLR cinematography.

Available now, the new Zacuto DSLR kits are universal and will work with all cameras and accessories. Zacuto kits allow users to make DSLR's work much like camcorders. All kits are balanced, which is critical for smooth movement and less user fatigue in both tripod and handheld use. Zacuto's trademarked Z-Release (quickrelease) allows for fast installation of components like an articulating
arm, matte box, follow focus, wireless mic, on-board monitor, an audioadapter, and more. Zacuto kits give you all the components you need for your camera package right out of the box. With various price points, no confusion, and the ability to be used with a tripod, steadicam, dolly, handheld and shoulder mount; you can purchase the kit that is perfect for you and your type of shooting.  All Zacuto products are made in the USA and come with a lifetime warranty.

DSLR camera's typically have low lens mounts, making it not possible tomount a matte box without raising the camera very high. The combination of Zacuto's height adjustable Universal Baseplate and their new Z-Spacer allows you to mount any matte box or follow focus, like the Z-Focus to any DSLR.

DxO Labs has unveiled www.dxomark.com, a new website delivering key objective metrics of sensor performance for a variety of cameras measured directly on the RAW image. Available as a free online resource, dxomark.com makes it possible for the first time to assess the intrinsic quality of a camera before the impact of any RAW conversion.

“There are many valuable resources reviewing the image quality of digital cameras, but none of them consider the actual RAW signal straight from the camera sensor,” explains Nicolas Touchard, Vice President of Marketing, DxO Labs Image Quality Evaluation business. “Demanding photographers who shoot in RAW should only care about the genuine quality of the RAW image, yet until now they have had to rely on measures based on converted RAW images, obviously biased by the processing applied to them, whether embedded or performed offline with a software RAW converter. Furthermore, as RAW converters evolve and improve, the latent potential of RAW images can only be gauged by analyzing the RAW images themselves, projecting the potential quality achievable with the ultimate RAW converter. This is why we believe that our approach will dramatically change the way photographers evaluate digital cameras.”

dxomark.com provides in-depth measurements of all the relevant characteristics of a sensor: actual ISO sensitivity (which generally differs from the value reported by the camera), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), dynamic range, tonal range, color depth and sensitivity, metamerism, etc. dxomark.com already covers 50 popular cameras, including Digital Single-Lens Reflex (DSLRs) and high-end bridge cameras offering RAW image format. The site will be updated on a regular basis with new cameras.
dxomark.com RAW image quality database relies on DxO Analyzer, the world’s leading turn-key laboratory solution for image quality evaluation. Thanks to its accuracy, completeness, and reliability, DxO Analyzer has become the reference tool for numerous leading imaging industry players, photography magazines and websites.
