In something of a surprise, Nikon announced at the CES 2016 show today in Las Vegas that it’s entering the competitive action camera market with several forthcoming products. The first in Nikon’s new action camera lineup will be the oddly named Nikon KeyMission 360, a rugged camera capable of “recording true 360-degree video in 4K UHD allowing users to share new perspectives and explore imagery like never before,” Nikon said in a press statement.

During the coming year, the means we’ll use to capture photographs may change but not the motivation to share our view of the world with others. To accomplish this goal we need tools to change the way we see that world and interact with it. Imagine handing an iPhone to Alexander Graham Bell. What would he think of it? The future of imaging includes many paradigm-shifting technologies such as robotics and artificial intelligence but in the short run, we’ll deal with trends.

If this is a photography trend, it’s one we like. Last month we told you about a photographer who attached a GoPro camera to his DSLR to show what it’s like to shoot a football game. Now another photographer, inspired by that cool clip, has attached a GoPro to his DSLR to give you a POV perspective on what it’s like to capture a dance music concert.

Drones are wonderful tools for photographers (versatile and fun to operate) but for one reason or another not every flight goes as planned. This brief viral video—captured in Victoria, Australia by photographer Adam Lancaster—documents a dramatic encounter between a DJI camera drone (just flying along, minding its own business) and what appears to be an irate wedge-tailed eagle.

Graava is a unique new video camera that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) and built-in sensors to automatically edit your videos. Countless hours of video are shot every day and most of that footage goes to waste because most of us don’t have the time or the proper tools to edit it. Graava solves that problem because it was built to shoot seamlessly and edit the footage for us.

A new start-up company called Z Camera has just unveiled the E1, a GoPro-style camera that uses a Micro Four Thirds sensor, takes interchangeable lenses, and is capable of shooting 4K video. We got some hands-on time with the E1 last week during a meeting with Z Camera’s founder, Jason Zhang. Images of the camera in this story are from that meeting.

We can expect Virtual Reality videos to be the next big advancement in Internet entertainment. Always ahead of the curve, Google yesterday introduced its Jump camera rig—a tool designed to help filmmakers create innovative 360-degree VR videos for YouTube that can be viewed on Google’s Cardboard VR headset. The Jump is a circular VR frame that uses 16 GoPro Hero4 cameras working in unison and set vertically (side by side) along the outer edge of the ring.
