Here’s a provocative short video to get you thinking today. In the 1.5-minute BBC clip below, renowned German film director and photographer Wim Wenders disparages “phone photography” and “selfies,” saying they may have killed photography as we know it.

Not always, but often enough, Jason Peterson’s photography is a waiting game. Until it isn’t.

I was pretty sure I wanted to talk with Eric Ward when I saw his iPhone pictures at various sites around the Web. I was absolutely sure when I read, at one of those sites, his best photography secret: “Perspective. I’m 6’4” and I see the world differently than my 3 year-old. Change your perspective while shooting a scene and you’ll find a whole new scene to shoot.”

Shutterbug, a member of the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA), once again joined forces with 30 other member magazines from around the world to choose the winners of the annual TIPA Awards for the best photo/imaging products in 40 different categories. The award process began in early 2017 with an initial selection of a wide range of products conducted by TIPA’s Technical Committee, on which Shutterbug’s Editor-at-Large George Schaub serves. 

Harold Davis came to iPhone photography about seven years ago by the usual route: “I’d been hearing about it,” he says, “and I needed a phone. I got the phone, and then it was, Okay, now let’s see what the camera can do.” What’s happened after that may or may not be considered usual.

We rarely use this space for opinion pieces, but Google’s new Clips camera really bugs me and I’m going to rant a bit, so please bear with me. Billed as “A new way to capture big moments and little ones,” Clips works in tandem with the Google Pixel 2 smartphone (as well as with Samsung’s S7/S8 and the iPhone 6 and up) to let you “shoot and share like never before.”

The Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone may be a few generations old, but it’s a rugged little device and shoots some decent video under turbulent conditions as you can see in the insane two-minute clip below.
