“I’m not dumb. I just have a command of thoroughly useless information.”—Bill Watterson

The first PMA show I attended in 1982 was also held in Las Vegas. A lot has changed since then, but photography has clearly changed the most. Here are some of the highlights for digital photographers I saw at this year’s edition:
The D-SLR announcements were few but...

It is very easy for collectors to get hung up on cameras and lenses, and to forget that photography is a lot more than this. Many small and not-so-small accessories are technically fascinating in their own right, and remind us how things used to be in an era less affluent but more diverse than our own. For the collector, or simply for those with an interest in the past, they have the twin...

Ladies and gentlemen, I am proud to present to you the noted nature and wildlife photographer Kevin Schafer, a man who may well serve as a role model for the pack rats among us; a man who faced his demons and trashed them.

Here we salute Kevin not for his outstanding photography—he is a recipient of the North American Nature Photography Association’s Outstanding Nature...

While we spend a good deal of time and energy in these pages reviewing cameras, there’s a good deal more to photography than light-tight boxes that capture images. Look into any photographer’s closet or kit bag and you’ll see a host of items that are sometimes essential, and sometimes impulse buys, that make photography more fun, and even expand the creative potential for any...

I try to be as aware of as many reviews of digital cameras as are published, particularly on the web. That is natural as it is a significant aspect of what my work as a digital photo writer involves. A recent imbroglio with a photographer about dSLR image quality got me thinking that most of what is written in reviews of camera is largely subjective, or comparative, one camera against another regarding image quality performance. But that is not all that helpful to anyone, so is there a way to measure dSLR image quality performance objectively? I think so if we can first agree on a definition of what photographic image quality is. What I believe would concern most photographer is how accurately a digital camera capture represents reality. In other words what degree of color fidelity to the subject is there in a dSR created image file?

Equivalent Exposure

by George Schaub

Now we come to how ISO, aperture, and shutter speed relate to one another. They exist to balance the amount of light in the scene with the recording made by the sensor and ultimately made into an image file on the memory card. Your goal is to record the scene with as true and balanced a color and lightnessof...

In an ideal world, all digital photos would be technically perfect: well exposed and exhibiting detail in all areas including any bright segments, the mid-tones and in dark shadow areas. While that level ofdetail...
