Clients buying location photography can include those from the travel, fashion, editorial, corporate, and even architectural fields. You might well ask—why don’t they just use stock? With so many sites and so many agencies and photographers offering images from every imaginable corner of the globe, hasn’t stock killed this market? Stock photography for this market is a topic for another day—this is about companies that need location photography because they need their people or property photographed and they know that stock will simply not fit the bill. As a related sidebar, we’ll also cover how you can rise above the iReporter-type shooter who often degrades the market by offering travel and lifestyle images for a “dime a dozen.”

Comfortably carry one or two D-SLRs with lens right on your backpack, where you can reach them easily and quickly – that's the ingenious idea behind the BACKPACK STRAP by SUN-SNIPER.

SUN-SNIPER's newest innovation solves the problem common to many hikers, mountain climbers, photo journalists and nature photographers - people who carry a backpack and need to have their camera nearby and ready to go in an instant. Instead of having to carry a backpack and a separate camera strap, owners of the BACKPACK STRAP can simply use their backpacks to transport their ready-to-shoot cameras. The SUN-SNIPER BACKPACK STRAP is fastened directly to the backpack. The backpack strap cushion evenly distributes the weight of the camera and lens, ensuring that your back is treated gently. The integrated SHOCK-ABSORBER – another highly praised SUN-SNIPER specialty – absorbs additional jolts and vibrations, making carrying equipment up to 5 kg a pleasure.

Out of all the telephoto focal lengths, the 400mm is my favorite, so I looked forward to Canon’s updated 400mm f/2.8L. At about $11,499 list price (slightly less on searched street prices) it’s for those who absolutely need a fast, fixed focal length lens in their still and/or video work, and that’s work that pays well.

Our Picture This! assignment this month was “Things Are Looking Up” and readers responded with a great variety of images with a skyward point of view. Many were architectural studies, and the fascinating compositions we received transformed the spaces in which we work, visit, and live. The abstraction engendered by taking a new point of view was certainly visually rewarding in all the entries we saw. It reminded us that some of the best images we can make are those that are made by looking anywhere but straight ahead, and we think when you look at the images below you’ll agree.
