I always enjoy trying out the best new high-end products. It’s fun, but more important it tells me how good the best performance can be. But when reviewing color management tools I realize that photographers are not color scientists or computer programming experts, so I thought I’d start this review with a bit of a tech briefing on why they are important to all photographers who want to get the most from their work.

The DSLR Pro Kit includes everything you need to clean the optics on your DSLR: the Original LensPen for lenses, FilterKlear™ to clean filters and MicroPro™ for eyepieces. All three feature two working ends: a retractable naturalbrush for removing loose dust and a carbon-impregnated cleaning pad for removing fingerprints from the optics surface. The carbon compound used in LensPen products is similar to the one found in printer’s ink – which is why newspapers have remained a popular method for cleaning windows and glass for generations. Also included in the DSLR Pro Kit is a microfiber pouch that holds all three pens and can also be used as a cloth for other cleaning applications.

Canon’s 13x19”-sized printers, the PIXMA Pro9500 Mark II and PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II, have had a longer life than most, but have been replaced with two new models that are similar to the PIXMA PRO-1, introduced over a year ago. New features on both the pigment-ink PRO-10 and dye-ink PRO-100 include Wi-Fi and AirPrint compatibility, a new plug-in to make printing easier, and a refined inkset.

The new size is made specifically for printing 8” x 12” images, which are native to full-frame sensor digital cameras. This type of camera, which has become more popular over time, creates image files in the 2:3 aspect ratio. This ratio produces image files that are 4x6, 8x12, 12x18, and up. 9” x 13” sheets are convenient because they allow photographers to print a full un-cropped 8" x 12" image with a slight border on all sides, perfect for matting and framing.

Red River Paper offers 9” x 13” sheets in glossy, luster, satin, matte, and fine art inkjet paper surfaces. Boxes range from 20 sheets to 50 sheets and start at just $19.99.

There are as many different ways to construct a website as there are to make a photograph, just as there are many genres of photography. Yet all have the same goal: to make a photograph that pleases the maker and viewer alike and makes both think about the experience. That’s why I love photography; there’s so much that can be enjoyed by practitioners of all levels, whether carrying a Micro Four Thirds camera or schlepping a large format view camera around the wilderness. We do it because we love to make photographs. May is National Photo Month so remember to have fun with your photography.

The Fujifilm HS50EXR is a bridge camera with an SLR-like design and a super zoom lens. The camera has very good workmanship/finishing; the body and the lens system are large and robust.

The world of photography is a very wide one, and in this report Roger Hicks takes us to the fringes of photographic accessories. While you might well wonder how you might use some of these items, well, you never know!—Editor

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No, um… it’s um… a camera-carrying helicopter drone. Honest! Though our other favorite in this meandering survey is probably a lot more use to a lot more people. It’s a changing room! It’s a hide for photographing wildlife! It’s a monopod! It’s a light modifier! It keeps the rain off! Or the sun! It’s… um, it’s an unusually versatile umbrella.
