Award-winning photographer Nick Veasey used his artist’s eye to move beyond the surface of every day objects in order to reveal the complex beauty hidden deep within them. His book, X-Ray, contains a wonderful collection of unique and well-crafted images that allow you to see the world like never before. With the aid of scientists and medical personnel, Veasey used X-rays to capture the inner workings of everything from musical instruments, animals, plants, various types of electronics and people. The results are both stunning and inspiring.

As billions of images are produced by millions of devices, the demand for bigger capacity storage, faster memory cards, and speedier methods of transferring huge files has become apparent. Cloud storage has become a standard offering among many camera makers; so independent cloud services have grown. A person would have to do a lot of gallery hopping to view and purchase a William Wegman photograph of his famous Weimaraners, one of Ron Galella’s many paparazzo shots of Jackie O, a slice of rock and roll history showing Janis Joplin in a 1968 recording session or the indelible 9/11 image of the plane headed for Tower 2, the 2001 “Photo of the Year.” These and nearly 50 other signed prints are up for auction and open for bidding, starting today at http://auctions.readysetauction.com/josephineherrickproj/. The auction, “Modern Masters of Photography,” is a fundraiser with 100 per cent of the winning bid going to the Josephine Herrick Project, a New York City nonprofit that uses photography in therapeutic programs for autistic children, veterans, at-risk youth and developmentally challenged children and adults.

Pro shows are a great time to catch up on the latest in lighting gear and trends, so we asked Joe Farace, who does lighting equipment tests for us here at Shutterbug (type Joe’s name in the Search box at www.shutterbug.com to see the wide range of gear he’s tested) to roam the floor at the WPPI show to see what’s hot. His report covers new equipment that caught his eye there but, while there’s plenty to read about, this is not intended to be a full report on what’s new in the category. Some of these products will be covered in future issues, with promised updates from Joe. Also, the show was a few months back, so most, if not all the gear, you read about here is available now. Check our web page news for new products and developments, and follow our in-depth lighting test reports that appear regularly in Shutterbug.—Editor

He stands in about 3 feet of roiling surf, wetsuit jersey glistening from repeated dunkings. The sky above Oahu’s North Shore is deep blue. Undertow currents grasp his legs—eroding sand beneath his swim fins—as water rushes seaward to build the next huge wave. He holds his bulky waterproof camera housing tightly, faces west toward the setting sun and checks the long tether attached to his wrist. He turns his head to watch the wave rise ever higher—a towering blue-green monster that’s starting to curl, white spume blowing off its top. He braces himself as best he can against the forces raging around him, points the camera toward the golden Hawaiian sunset, and waits as tons of water begins to curl over him, forming a tube. At what he hopes is the right instant, he fires off several shots and prepares to be pounded and rag-dolled by the massive wave.
