Zoom lenses for the most part attempt to do everything, but for the critical shooter, nothing as well as a good prime lens. Better zoom lenses can be very expensive, especially fixed f2.8 lenses. But for the beginning DSLR user you can start with one of the inexpensive zooms and grow into something better suited to your developing style. I do recommend Nikon lenses over non Nikon lenses.
