Xray work arounds

Hello all,

I am wondering what is the best way to get around the xray machines for my b&w film? Can I ask for a hand inspection as opposed the them putting it through the machine? Also, I have just stuffed my pockets with medium format film before (since the reel is plastic, the medal detectors don't go off) but was wondering if the medal detector did anything to my film. Also, i was wondering whether u.s. mail gets xrayed. If not it might just be best to ship my mail home as opposed to worry about the airport. Thoughts?

You can ask for hand inspection, and they are quite prepared for this. It depends on the film speed, though, as to whether it's needed. My understanding is that if your film is at 400 or over you should do this. I don't think the mail is a problem. I say this partly to see later answers and find out if my beliefs are correct!

If you are shooting with low speed film, don't worry about it. These days I don't go through the hassle of hand inspections, I just put them through the xray machines. FWIW, I recently went on a trip to New Zealand/Australia where my film, Velvia 50 & 100, mostly 4x5 and 35mm, went through the xray machines 8 times. Not a single image was fogged.
