Wide Lens Tokina 12-24mm vs Sigma 10-20mm

I'm looking for opinions on sharpness.

Two nice and well priced ultra wides are available, the Tokina 12-24mm & Sigma 10-20mm. Tokina is fixed at F4, Sigma is slower at F4-5.6 but wider at 10mm vs 12mm. Both get good reviews. I have the Nikon 18-200mm (and love it)so I don't need the wide lens to go past 18mm.

Sharpness is the big question for me. I would like the extra 2mm of the Sigma, but not at the expence of a big difference in sharpness. I'm an amature, in it just for fun, although I take many shots, but don't edit many. I'm using Nikon D-70s, for the wide, mostly landscape and inside portrate.

Anyone have an opinion as to the sharpness compareson of the two in normal lighting conditions? Is there something else I'm missing?

Isn't the 10mm Sigma a full frame fisheye at the wide end and the Tokina 12mm a wide angle?

Personally I'd get the Nikon 12-24mm over either of the two you're looking at. Especially if sharpness is an issue.

Both are wide zooms for medium frame digital SLRs. Both are compared together (with the Tamaron 11-18mm) as less expensive alternatives to the Nikon, which to me is a bit expensive as a toy since I'm just a amature having fun.

Have you looked at the reviews of these lenses on www.dpreview.com, Popular Photography magazine ( www.popphoto.com ), etc.?

Thanks for the tip. I have read the reviews which brought me to the question at hand. Both were considered sharp, although I didn't see an opinion on the tradeoff of 2mm for sharpness. The tradeoff seems to be the extra 2mm of the Sigma vs the faster Tokina. Pros seem to like the Tokina, however with my med frame D70s I'm unsure weather my camera can take advantage of the difference. Aditionally, I have to admit, I am attracted to the extra 2 mm. The comparisons point to personal preference, sooooo I may have answered my own question.

An extra 2 mm will add no perceptible 'wideness' to your images. It's totally academic. Just step back a few centimetres form the subject. Lens sharpness, speed, etc, should be the deciding factor for you, not an imperceptible 2mm is focal length.
