WHY STAY WITH A DSLR

I have been researching buying a newer camera than my D80. With the new, advanced small digital cameras such as the Nikon P500, what is the advantage to staying with a DSLR?

What kind of pictures do you like to take? P&S cameras have limited lens (zoom) range and greater lag time and fewer flash options. If you can live with those limitations, why not purchase a camera that fits in your pocket or carry easily all the time.
