Which zoom lens for XTi?

Hi Everyone,
I am new here & I recently purchased a Canon XTi. I wasn't realy thrilled with the lens I got with the camera package but it will do for now. I'm trying to find a nice but affordable zoom lens. I would like it to go to at least 200-300. I've been looking at Canon & Tamron. I take a lot of outdoor photos but I also like to do portraits. Any advice? Thanks!

Amazon.com has an awesome price on the 70-200 4.0 L series lens. Just about $500. I'm thinking about getting one myself.
