There are no rules, though I do like a big glossy print of spectacular landscapes and matte for gentler subjects. My taste, and made on an image by image basis.

A package of premium glossy and heavyweight matte paper represents a quite small investment and you will use it up anyway. The right surface is very much an individual matter of taste, so get some practice printing and see which you like best for each subject. The R1800 has a reputation of producing the best possible glossy prints of any printer, however it will also do a very nice job on matte.

Make sure you select the correct profile from the driver dialog when you make the prints. When you make your own prints, you have the pride of doing the whole process of making photographs from concept to presentation.
