Which camera is best for me?

I am looking to purchase a digital SLR camera. I am not a pro, but not a rookie. After finding out that my Canon lenses (from my 35mm camera) will NOT work with the new digitals (despite the salespeople assuring me that they would!), I decided to look at some of the other brands. Some of the cameras I've looked into are the Canon Rebel XTi, the new Sony Alpha100, the Nikon D70s and a couple other. I do need to stay under $1,000 budget-wise. I wouldn't mind finding a good used one either.

Most of the photos I take are of horses, horse events (horse shows), pets, and dog events (such as agility). So lots of action shots, lots of movement, lots of cropping of photos, some indoor but mostly outdoor shots, use quite a bit of telephoto lenses, have to move around alot to get the shots, etc, etc.

Which camera would you think has the best feature for those uses/needs?

Your still able to use the FD mount lenses on an EF mount body so long as you get a converter, and your comfortable using MF.

Stood in store for 45 minutes while various camera guys tried to get my lens to work with new digital Canon. It doesn't. For whatever reason.

So... still no answers on camera choice?

those salespeople probably thought you had EOS AF lenses which are supposed to work on the AF digital series of cameras. Many of these folks have no knowledge of photog. prior to AF, would be my guess.
As to cameras, probably any brand in your price range will have the facilities that you require for your stated purpose. Some models may have features that MAY be deireble to some: Olympus has a live preview(useless, IMHO), Pixel Mapping and Auto sensor cleaning(very useful). One or two brands have Image stabilization IN CAMERA, others have it in the lenses themselves.
the more expensive units have a more robust build quality and perhaps better onboard processing firmware.
I would suggest that you see which brands and models fit your hands better and see which ones have the more intuitive control layout. If all you are used to is a brick, then all of it will be new to you, as it was me.
