I want to learn photography. Can someone tell me where to start. I want to learn what all the settings on the camera are and how and when to use them.
Like many people - men, stereotypically - I hate reading manuals. Nonetheless your camera manual is the place to start - and to keep going over. You don't say if it's digital or film, but regardless you should probably start with basic books like those by Kodak or (more advanced but still comprehensive) those by John Hedgecoe. Scan them in a library or bookstore or try Amazon, to see which ones are suited. Practice, practice, practice. And try to find a more experienced person who can give you advice. This sounds liks a lot of work but still, have fun!
I agree with Alex on both things - that the manual is the best place to find the answers you're seeking, and that reading the manual can be pretty dry stuff. But I've noticed that if I play with the camera for a while first and then look at the manual, my own fumblings will have given me a frame of reference which I can use to understand what the manual is saying.
What's more, a little experience with the camera might cause something in the manual to catch your eye which you'd have missed otherwise. I absolutely agree that you should look around locally for someone who enjoys photography and can point out some basics - this person need not be a professional photographer, just someone you know who has a little more experience than you do. In fact, you might have difficulty with a professional; for them, time is money and though they may be willing enough to help you, they also have to take care of business.
The bottom line is have fun and explore and you'll learn the basics just as most of the rest of us did - through discovery.
I agree with Chip and Alex. In addition, you may have a community college in your area that has a photography course, or even a local camera club. Also, check a bookstore for a book called "Photography for Dummies". Very good, basic info there....

Well we all agree. But one other thing. After you've started, shoot a lot; no shoot a LOT!!! Reading teaches function and theory, experience is the best teacher tho.
