wondering how you guys might handle this situation, i mean i know how i handled it but now im wondering if i should pursue it further.... was at a park for an event, i wasnt there in any photographic manner and the event was not photo related. I have my younger son with me and I let him bring his bike to ride around. I am keeping an eye on him and he is within earshot but in a 2 second timeframe, i see some guy stop him and start to pose him and begin taking pics, i start over there (quickly) to see whats going on and tell my son to get over here now, my son heads for me immediately and this guy starts to walk off the other direction i ask my son what he was doing. he explained he just wanted a couple of pics of him riding his bike. i look around (more concerned for my son than this guy at the moment) to find him and notice he is now with a woman his age and then he starts to approach me. He's got a cheezy biusness car in his hand and a rehersed sounding story about how he is a nature photographer and he just thought my son was the cutest thing on his bike etc. he offers the card with a website on it and says he will gladly let me download all pics of him to keep if they look good and he posts them. I started to go off on him, but being a fellow photographer i decided to give the benefit of the doubt and just kinda stated to him that i am concerned and he should see how this might look bad. he bolted off and went around taking more pics... A little later he and the woman was close enough to see his gear, nothing a pro would use, a silver bodied camera that appeared to be an slr, but looked like it was a knock off point and shoot designed to look like an slr.it had no brand name above the lens i could see. he had it on a flash bracket from circa 1963 without a flash. still i just let sleeping dogs lie and kept my son at arms length and the other eye on him the rest of time we were there. I figure the other woman was his wife, and it all was probably innocent and just misunderstood.
Now 2 days later, i go to this "photographer's" gallery (what it says on his card anyway) and its a collection of decent pics, but many are very dated like he hasnt been doing anything professionally in a while just knocking around a bit with a camera for fun mostly. My son's pics arent on there (yet), but every one of his pics are free to download in hi res and on the same site as his nature stuff is some nude pics (while done in an artful manner, still nude) with no restrictions or seperations from other pics and many pics of fully recognizeable people that are obviously taken from a bit of a distance and cropped (due to compression of background, prob with a telephoto). Im wondering if i shouldnt have been a bit more aggressive in demanding they not be used, especially since any schmuck with an internet connection can download them, and if this guys intentions were truly innocent.I have pics of my kids as most of us parents do, viewable online and i know that they could be viewed by anyone, but i dont know if this guy is the prez of the local NAMBLA chapter and his website is a gateway to some deviant traffic drawn there for his "innocent" stuff... I mean what photographer whos been photographing people for any length of time doesnt know you need to at least ask permission for a non-news type of shot and ideally/usually get a madel release, ESPECIALLY a minor? I tried to be cool about it and give him the benefit because i have been in a couple of situations where someone thought i didnt have the best of intentions, but it was a property matter, not MY minor child! in my younger days i probably would have just took the camera away, yanked the film or memory card and threatened to put the lens somewhere it wasnt made to go...converting it to an "A" mount, pun intended.... there wasnt a readily accesible means of contact listed on his site's home page or anything, but some further digging later may reveal one (the page is fairly poor in layout as well). im going to send him an email/letter or something to regards of not posting his pics and reminding him of privacy rights of peiople, because i think its genuinely a case of this guy doesnt know WTF he's doing... any suggestions on this will be helpful, as i dont want to be a total a-hole but dont mind setting this guy straight....
