Ok I not at all up to date with the new stuff here. I just got the money up and bought my first Digital SLR of course I went with Canon but all my leanses will fit it just great.
Anyway what is RAW and what can we do with it?
RAW is the unprocessed data from the sensor. It is considered like the negative when shooting film. Working with a RAW file (CRW from a Canon) will give you more post processing options than shooting JPEG which is processed in the camera.

RAW is basically a data file that contains all the image information gathered by the camera's digital sensor when you took the shot. It's the best file to use for initial post-processing (i.e., digital darkroom work) because changes you make in a RAW file are less destructive of image information than those made in any other format. After that, you convert the RAW file to another image format, such as TIFF or JPEG, your selection being determined by what you plan to use the image for. Look here for further info:

There is a lot more information available (and needed!) than in any of the above, so welcome to the learning curve.....
