the .cr2 file is a RAW file that Canon uses. i have the same camera. open up the images in Digital Photo Professional software that came wth your camera....then convert to .tiff or to .jpg. Problems solved.

Welcome to the fun part of digital image handling! Sorry to hear you're having trouble with the uploads. I guess you already learned the lesson about not formatting the card until you're sure the upload is successful.

File Browser is designed to handle JPEG images. you have two other options for your RAW files, either the above-mentioned Digital Photo Professional software, or the EOS File Viewer provided by Canon on the Solutions Disk. Simply open File Viewer after connecting your camera to the computer. At the top of the file menu, click on Canon>1>DCIM>100 Canon, and thumbnails of all your RAW images (AKA CR2 files) will appear. Then, drag the 100 Canon folder down to another folder on your computer (one I call "Digital Negatives"). Drop down to the new 100 Canon folder and open it, and the thumbnails will reappear. Now, File viewer will allow you to convert the CR2 files to TIFF files for processing in your editing software, or you can skip this step if your editing software handles RAW files directly.

One other tip: When you're satisfied that all your images are successfully uploaded, you can go back up to the 100 Canon file at the top of the file menu. Remember, these are the images in your camera. Go to Edit>Select>Select All>Delete, and all the images will be erased. You don't have to reformat the card every time....

I have another question, what if I do not have Digital Photo Professional and EOS File Viewer with me? Can I use other software to download or to view it? The problem is I'm in Mexico for 3 months, and I'm carrying a laptop with me. I didn't think I needed those bundled softwares from Canon, so I didn't bring it along with me. Took a couple of RAW pics last week and I realized I needed those software. So, went to Canon homepage, but oI could only find updates on those software. Any other alternative methods to get it downloaded to my laptop?

Adrian, all is not lost, if your laptop is running Windows XP. Connect your camera to the laptop. When the pop-up window with program options comes up, select "Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard". This program will allow you to upload your CR files to your laptop, and even view them. You won't be able to edit these files unless you have a version of Photoshop with the Camera Raw plug-in, but at least they'll be safely (more or less) stored in your laptop until you get home......

Also, if you have Photoshop CS (I don't know about 7.0 or before) it can open and edit (of course) raw files. However, the .cr2 is a newer format and you would need to download the Camera Raw update 2.4 which is available here.

Thanks for your help guys. Actually, I installed an update "RAW Viewer" from Microsoft and it's suppose to ensure that I can see RAW files from my camera. Bill, I did try to hook up my camera to the laptop and use the "Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard" , but it still couldn't detect those files.

Right now I have Photoshop CS2 on my laptop and I actually installed the update "Camera RAW 3.1". I followed the instructions and I think I did it right. With this update, is it capable of opening CR2 files? Or do I actually need to use the "Adobe DNG Concerter" to convert to a general RAW before I can open it in CS2?

Just to make sure, after I did the update for CS2, I launched it and under the File menu, I clicked on Open and under the File of Types, I still don't see *.CR2 format. Sorry for all the questions guys, but I do not want to keep the same RAW pics in my camera for 3 months. And if I were to buy another 1GB CF card here in Mexico, I heard it costs $6000 pesos...you do the convertion

I have not used CS2 so I don't know for sure, but I would guess that the Camera Raw utility on CS2 would have .cr2 support since .cr2 was released before CS2. Try the browser in CS2 and see if it can open the files.

You should be able to copy the files off of your memory card using windows explorer or "my computer." The computer should be able to see the files even if it can't open them.

Ryan is right. CS2 does support .cr2 files in Camera Raw. I don't understand why the Scanner and Camera Wizard is not working for you....

OK, I owe somebody an apology here. I've been trying for the last hour to upload RAW images from my EOS 20D using the Windows Scanner and Camera Wizard, as I recommended earlier. Now I'm convinced it can't be done. What deceived me was that I had uploaded a mixed bag of JPEG and (I thought) RAW images using the Wizard. After the file copy was complete, the Wizard displayed the JPEG images plus some earlier RAW files previously uploaded using the Canon Viewer Utility. Silly me. Anyway, I'm sorry if I mislead anyone with my bad advice.

I think the only thing you can do while on the road is (a) find a Canon dealer who'll let you borrow the software CD and download the apps into your laptop; or (b) go online to the Canon website and download the Viewer Utility update. This may not work, because the download instructions say that the previous version must be installed. But, if you're really desperate there's nothing to lose by trying.

I'm not a photo guru but I can find my way around a computer. The easiest way to get your photos into your computer is to use a card reader. They can be had for around $20 and up. Plug it into the computer, put the CF card in the reader and use Windows Explorer to drag and drop the files to wherever you want them. If you've downloaded Microsofts raw image viewer you'll be able to view your raw photos in that, if not at least you'll have them safely on your computer and you can free up space on the CF card by deleting the photos (either from the computer or in the camera.)

Yesterday, I went throught a new weird issue: I can't send a file to my CF card trought the EOS 20D.

I resume the situation:
I own a EOS 20D.
I'm far far away from home, on a guest computer without canon software installed and not in possession of canon's CD.

I can download JPEG to the computer.
But:
I can't see and can't obviously download raw .CR2 file to the computer.
I can't send a file from the computer to the camera. I would like to send the FIRMWARE update.

Maybe it's because i'm using a non-USB 2.0 capable computer.

Doesn't matter whether its USB 2.0 or 1.1, unless the Canon drivers for the camera are installed on the host computer it will not communicate with the camera. That leaves you unable to do the firmware upgrade.

and download the WIA driver for the camera. Once you've installed it you should be able to get the firmware upgrade into the camera.

I found the following on the Canon website under firmware upgrade instructions for the 20D, it explains your problem and reinforces the need for a cardreader.

Q: Do I need any special equipment to update the EOS 20D's firmware?
A: The firmware update file needs to be copied to a CF card, so a card reader or a computer with a PC card slot will be required.
When using CF cards with a card reader, however, there are cases where a PC card adapter is necessary.

Other required equipment is listed below.

(1-A) Battery Pack BP-511A or BP-514 (The battery pack must be fully charged.)
(1-B) AC Adapter Kit ACK-E2 (sold separately)
(2) CF card (8MB or more, 2GB or less)

In order to supply power to the camera, either (1-A) or (1-B) is necessary.

It looks like you can't transfer the firmware file directly to the camera but must copy it to the cf card via the computer and card reader then install it when the card is placed in the camera.

After installing service pack 2 and the RAW viewer utility update from microsoft, I'm able to see .CR2 file on the cf card.

REBEL XT users. YOU CAN use your cr2. raw image format with Photoshop CS2!!!

Go to this page and download the plugin (May 2005) and place it inside Applications>Adobe Photoshop CS2>Plugins>File Formats: http://www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html
You will be able to open, modify, save and save as off RAW.

Additionally, depending on the time that you purchased the camera, you may require the latest firmware update. Go to http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=DownloadDetailAct&fcategoryid=314&modelid=11154 and FOLLOW the instructions for downloading and installing file Digital Rebel XT Firmware Update Ver. 1.0.2 (May 2005).

I borrowed my sister's Rebel XT and just realized that it doesn't have a video mode. Is this true or I am missing something?

All depends on what you mean by "missing something" :-). But seriously, folks, it's there. I'm not exactly sure where the port is on the XT, but on both the earlier (300D) model and on the 20D it's on the left side under a rubber cover. I've never used it, so I can't tell you how to set it up......

Sorry, I guess I misunderstood your original question. You can't shoot video with the XT, but you can show your still shots on a TV. That's what the video port is for....
