Ads and any other distractions cause people to leave and not see your photography so it ends up being counter productive. I'm not familiar with what templates are available, but depending on the purpose of the web site, you can easily throw together something in an evening or two using a program like FrontPage or Dreamweaver. If you want something more sophisticated with a shopping cart, check out something like http://smugmug.com/.
