Using RAW with Pain Shop Pro

Hi, I am getting into photography again after a long layoff. And after using a little point and shoot digital for a couple of years, decided to upgrade. I think I want to use RAW as I'm not too concerned with file size and have enjoyed processing photos in Paint Shop Pro XI (there is an XII out but I haven't purchased the upgrade.) PSP says it handles RAW, but when (as a test) I converted a jpeg to RAW and then tried to open it...all I got was a black picture... okay a funny black picture that had bars etc. in it. It asks me for pixel height and width; gives me a choice of greyscale, RGB, CMY or CMYK; Asked about header size; choice of planar or interleaved; order RGB or BGR; flipped. I don't see a lot of info in the help file about this and (unfortunately) there are no user groups (per say...some kind of newsgoup??) at Corel. Where could I learn about this format and what these choices mean?

Unfortunately, I will probably ask more questions than have answers for some time....but I thank you for your help.

Very likely you opened up Pandora's box by trying to covert from JPE to RAW as it generally not supported. Only digital cameras as far as I have seen are capable of and have the facilities to produce a RAW format file.

So the fact you obtained a black, blank image is not surprising, Until you have RAW format files saved by a digital camera I don't think there is much to be learned about it. But PaintShop Pro 11 does support RAW format, but whether it will support a new camera you might purchase might rquire an upgrade to version 12.

Thanks for your help. I did some additional research. While PSP does not support my camera, I found some other programs that do and may offer some advantages when processing RAW data. Also found a pdf file that helps explain the difference between RAW and JPEG. I will continue to work on the issue.

Like you, I was out of the loop for decades and decided to re-enter a few years ago. Like you, I first used a P&S digital until I got my feet wet again and moved up into the DSLR type. Since switching to the RAW format, I have never looked back. There are occasions where RAW may not be suitable for a particular shoot but most of the time, I use the RAW format. Why? With JPEG, it does all the sharpening, saturation, exposure clipping, et cetera leaving you with a camera edited version of your shot. If you are in a hurry, this may work well for you especially if you expose correctly, have a good white balance and have few flaws. Post-processing is minimal because what is not used is discarded. Not so with RAW. It retains everything and does little to the image. The sharpening, color saturation, white balance, exposure and so on can all be modified in post-processing. If you like post-processing [RAW does require post-processing] as I do, then this is a good choice. If you do not...

The image you see on the camera LCD after shooting a RAW image is, in actuality, a JPEG image rendered for viewing. It will not be what you will see with a RAW image. Enjoy the journey.
