Using a floppy disc for an IR filter?

I was recently at a photography store looking for a ir filter that I can use with my Nikon D50. The store clerk said they did not carry any IR filters, but did recommend a poor mans alternative.

She said to crack open a few old 3.5" floppy disk and use them as a filter.

I tried this and found the disk to work as a super dark red, but I am unsure if it is trully IR. Is there some test I can do find this out, or haas anyone else heard of such thing?

I've got to admit that it's not something I would have thought of... On the other hand, what did you think of the results? Infrared images don't really have a red tinge, but if you LIKED the image, then I'd think that aesthetics would trump accuracy.

You should attach an image made this way so we can look at your results.

After taking the picture, open it in Photoshop/Elements and desaturate and then run Auto Levels. That should make it more like conventional black and white infrared.
